I am getting a growing feeling. I'm 40 whilst away and trying to ignore the fact. When my mum first found out when I'd be away, she sounded a bit miffed I wouldn't be here 'for my 40th'. Her and my dad are going to stay here whilst we're away and they'll be here for a day or 2 when I get back. I've been asked repeatedly what I want for my birthday by my Mum (and also now one of my sisters) and I'm really not interested.

I had an email from my other sister this morning asking if we could sponsor my niece in a dance-a-thon. She said that if we sponsored her, my sister would put the money in and she'd collect it when she comes over next month......I thought she was coming here at the end of July....I will not be best pleased if I get back and my family are here with a 'surprise' party. I know that probably sounds ungrateful but I've made it clear I'm not interested but I know what my Mum is like!!!

No matter how much you hide, you'll still be forty.

You may see it as "growing old", but your family love you so much, they're grateful you haven't gone down the alternative route and are still with them.

    I wish scaredy!!

I'm not anti-surprises, when I was 18, I had nothing arranged and shyly asked a couple of people from the theatre company if they'd like to have a meal out. They said yes and as a surprise invited about 12 others. It was lovely, all my Mum could say was 'right, so you'll spend time with your friends, but not your family'. They had nothing arranged for me so it wasn't as if I'd walked away from something planned, but it really hurt me that my Mum reacted like that. I don't particularly 'do' family, I get on with everyone but don't do the whole family get together thing, never have done.

I loved hitting 30, but 40 is a real problem for me for lots of reasons. Although as my passport still says I'm 34 this year (even though I've told them and put it in writing when I've renewed), I should stick to that (although I know I have no way of getting away with saying I'm 34 :rotfl: )

Why? What does it signal the end of?
