buying SORN'ed car

I am looking at a friends car which is currently SORN. It needs MOT and tax which is fine in principle but I am curious about the logistics. I read that you can take car for PRE ARRANGED appt (and back) as long as the car is insured. However, I was of the understanding that terms of insurance state that car has to have MOT and Tax for insurance to be valid. (from what I have read). Also, as a new driver, I cannot get 'temporary' insurance anyway but didn't want to rely on my friend doing all this. Is there an alternative that I am missing here? apologies for ignorance but i am quite new to all this.

You have really amswered your own question.

    Get car insured
    Get car MOT'd
    Apply for VED.

My question though would be why buy the car before it has an MOT? Ask seller to MOT car and adjust price accordingly.

Get them to MOT and tax the car first before you buy. You also cannot drive the car with no tax, so you would have to get it trailored away too.

Insure the car. Make an appointment at the MOT station (make sure they record the reg number, your name, and type of car), drive the car there, get MOT, drive home (or back to friend's house), park off the highway until your tax disc arrives.

You will not be doing anything wrong.

A car does not need tax or an MOT if you are taking it to have a prearranged MOT test. It must, however, be insured.
