Re-evaluating it all, I could afford maintenence and the like but I think you have all just reconfirmed my thoughts in the back of my mind that i was refusing to listen to:

Well done! First step on the road to becoming savvy with money - good idea to try saving what you think the car would cost you each month if it was on a loan, and build in the running costs etc.
I suspect that after the first month you won't like the result of having little money!0
