rbs personal loan

Options
Hi, my name is Gemma

I have a personal loan with RBS and was recently laid off by a recruitment agency. i have contacted RBS numerous times asking for help or financial hardship on the loan but they insist that it wont help me in the long run! I am on jobseekers allowance and once the monthly payment is made that leaves me with 10 pounds to live on for a fortnight. Im also paying other bills from my previous rented property (which i had to move out of because of being laid off) does anyone have any idea were I could get advice or help from?

Also when I took out the loan I was sold insurance under the impression that it would cover me, even though I was working for a recruitment agency! Of course once I was laid off it didn't cover me for anything so I had the insurance removed, but they refuse to pay back what I have paid (which is a couple of hundred pounds at least) surely I'm entitled to that money back! the guy who sold me the loan/insurance was well aware of who I was working for!

Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Gemma

Hi Gemma. Sorry to hear of your situation.

RBS, like most others, will not help you whilst you are still meeting your commitments to them - as it sounds like you are doing.

You could visit CAB or talk to CCCS and they will help you work out what you CAN afford to pay towards the loan, old bills etc and offer template letters to send to creditors etc etc etc. As for the PLP - theres a specific section for claiming that back - duck in there and I'm sure they will be able to offer much advice.

In the interim, get your JSA paid into another bank (open one now, before the risk of things spiraling)

Remember though, that not making the right payments WILL have a negative influence on your credit file

Good luck with the loan and good luck with the job hunt!

  • Thank you very much, very helpful....I will be opening a new bank account tomorrow!
It's frustrating as the loan is a small one and the plan is to save and pay it off in full once i'm working! Then I can be rid of RBS once and for all! Any recommended banks would be very helpful.
    Thank you again,
    Gemma :-)

Personally, I bank with NatWest and would quite happy reccomend their step account (basic account) as nice and painless to open & Uk call centres etc etc - although its part of the same family as RBS its a different business and right of offset etc doesn't apply. You will need to take proof of identity (passport/driving License) and proof of address to the branch (recent utility bill / bank statement)

Others have recommended HSBCs basic account and accounts with the co-op although I couldn't comment on them.
