in Cutting tax
Hi!
Hope you can help... I am very confused with tax codes etc and don't normally check them or anything but since checking my payslips over the last couple of years with the same employer I note that I started with tax code 511L in 2007 (salary £22,000) and it has gradually gone up to 547L (salary £25,625). Does this sound right? Do tax codes usually change each year? Did I pay too much tax in 2007? How can I check this?
Regards
Louise

in tax year 2007-8 the 'normal' tax code was 522L
in tax year 2008-9 the (final ) normal tax code was 603L
in tax year 2009-10 the normal tax code was 647L
and now is still 647L
it does NOT depend upon salary but may be affected by benefits in kind, tax owed from previous years etc.0 -
Hi Louise,
As Calpton has said, the tax code does change every year. The code relates to the amount you receive each year tax free. Assuming that you do not have any other benefits etc, then it would appear that your tax code has been incorrect. I would call HMRC and speak to them about it.0
