I am shocked and appalled at the cost of a loaf these days - £1.95 for a large branded seeded loaf?! I only use bread for toast anyway so I now only buy ys bread (my last large loaf cost me 19p, average is around 45p) and freeze it.
I try to buy seeded, multigrain whole meal loaves but occasionally I will buy a plain white one. It's not very healthy but thick cut white bread with lots of butter makes the best toast IMO (probably because all you can taste is the sugar and salt!)“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. Max out Tesco points:
On the self-service machines, you can suggest that you have -re-used a bag when you didn't, or didn't even pick one up.
If you see any receipts hanging out of the machine, grab them and claim the points if the previous person didn't scan their clubcard.
Order a bunch of replacement clubcards, rough them up, then start replacing your friends' cards with your own - they probably won't look at the name.0 -
I have a coffee break with my colleagues every day and we always have something with the coffee. We bring our own ground coffee and make it in a cafetiere (the benefits of working with French people, they don't settle for bitter instant stuff!
)
My colleague would buy a large kitkat every day to share at 78p so last time I was in £land I bought 8 small kitkats for £1. That's equivalent to 4 large ones and saved us £2.12 per week (that's a staggering £51 over 6 months!!)“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. Points for guts but a) that's fraud and b) I'm not sure I'd wanna be your friend if you're happy to steal from me :eek:“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. Remember to read labels on food. For example in Aldi, the same weight of diced chicken breast is 20p cheaper than the same weight of chicken mini fillets. Don't be fooled into thinking that big packs are necessarily cheaper they might not be.
When making sauces from scratch isn't an option (time, mobility issues etc), look at tins of soup. These are generally cheaper than jars of sauce, especially if you get them from the likes of B&M/Home Bargains etc.
Milk of magnesia makes a great face mask if you have oily skin. You don't need a lot, put a thin layer on freshly washed and dried skin (wash with warm water to keep your pores open) and leave it to dry. Once its dried you can rinse it off with cool water.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0 -
I can second Jamie's piadina recipe, just SR flour, salt and water. Splitting the piadina was a pain though, but it's a rough and ready meal so it didn't matter too much that it wasn't perfect. I used his suggested tuna filling and it's lovely.
I wouldn't recommend trying to defraud Tesco...!
Tortillas from Aldi are much cheaper than those from elsewhere but I've also used fairly thick home made pancakes as a good substitute in the past.
Filo pastry is often found reduced in stores as people are short on ideas to use it, I buy it when on offer at 3 packs for £1 in Heron Foods. Theirs is usually sold chilled but it freezes and defrosts very well.
Filo makes a great wrap for spring - roll style finger foods that can be baked in the oven. Just remember to cool the filling a bit so it doesn't wreck the pastry.
Edit to add to Uniscots97 - Batchelor's / Campbells condensed soup as sold in Heron for 40p a tin is fantastic in recipes.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
Thanks for suggesting the piadina recipe - just had them for lunch and they were delicious and so quick and easy. I'd never heard of them.0

No problem glad I could help. He's also got a good cheap and easy pitta recipe that uses value plain yoghurt. My hubby loves to snack on bread and I can't leave a loaf lying around without finding huge chunks missing so I've become quite good at quick alternativesOct 2013: -12,382.89

I really hope this was tongue-in-cheek or you're not a good friend :eek:I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -

Would you be willing to post that recipe please? We get through so much bread, despite there just being two of us.0
