We went to a few wedding fairs first to give us an idea of costs and the style of albums/photos etc and took it all from there. Generally at wedding fairs they have some offers on, normally things like 'book today and get so much off' but we didn't let this pressure us into booking as you need to shop around and get to know the photographer - you need to at least like them - they are going to be with you all day on the wedding day!
We simply googled for photographers in the area, checked out their websites and then spent a few days driving around to their premises, talking with them, looking at their portfolios and getting the price lists. This gave us a basis with which to compare several photographers in our own time.
In the end, we chose because we liked her as well as her photos! The prices aren't the cheapest of all we compared but we felt she had more of a personal touch, was very friendly and forthcoming and we just felt right picking her!!0 -
I have a friend who's a photographer - doesn't generally do weddings but I'm hoping I can talk him into doing mine at 'mates rates'. But if not my starting point will be looking at photographers who've worked at the venue (my wedding's at Chester Zoo). I like to know they're familiar with the place they're photographing (so they know best angles, lighting etc). Also I would want to know their attitude to other guests taking their own pics. One wedding I went to the photographer was so keen that people would only use his pics that his mother was his assistant...as he set up between shots she paced in front of the happy couple waving a walking stick around so nobody got an uninterupted shot!!0

I found ours by looking around at local photographers. I contacted each and went to look at their work and we choose our because we love their work, they were willing to tailor the package to suit our budget and we had a really good rapport with them.:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0

On here! There is a thread for photographers in different regions for under £500. Not booked yet because they are being a bit cagey about meeting in person. Should I be worried?:jGetting married 17th July 2010 woohoo :j0

Yeah that's what I thought. I don't need to meet him to see more of his work I just need to meet to check he is normal/not scruffy/knows what he is doing. And the fact that he seems to not want to meet makes it a bigger issue.:jGetting married 17th July 2010 woohoo :j0

had a look round one of the wedding fairs that i went to just checking prices and asking general questions. we also talked to a friend of our best man who we both know as he's done some gig photography for us as well.
after a fair amount of himming and haaaaaing and bartering we're probably going with our best mans friend (we know him, like him and we'll be comfortable with him on the day) and he's giving us a fairly good discount as well.
just got the final quote from him through today, OH has still to look at it but it's a really good deal and it also helps that he does duo wedding albums (combines both traditionally mounted pics with storybook pics) in the albums which i fell in love with and very few people actually do them that way. his photos are fantastic as well so hopefully we will pay the deposit next week and make it all official!0 -
We were recommended by a friend.
Think that is a bit odd as ours came round to our house before we had book just discuss what we'd like and our budget etc!0 -
Definitely, I wouldn't book a photographer I hadn't met. We are meeting with several to get to know them & see their work in person before making a decision. It's so important as someone who you think looks really good from their website might just not suit you when you meet them in person, and vice versa. Make sure you meet them first! On here!
