Letter charges claims- are the banks catching on?

Hi. I've been after a debit card only account and I have a credit rating that reads like a horror story!
Anyway. some kind posters pointed me in the direction of NatWest who offer STEP account which has a Solo debit card (NO credit facilities) with DD's & standing orders, and to payplan where I found that the Co-operative Bank do CASHMINDER account where you get the same except the debit only card is Electron. I've been accepted on both and I'm pleased because you can't go overdrawn.:j
According to Payplan the Co-op does not charge for bad DD's if they happen, but when I went & did the paperwork, the bumph said that they charge
£19.**for their letters!
What struck me was this is a huge difference from £35 that others charge. Maybe MSE's campaign is starting to take effect? Fingers crossed! :money:

I've been with th Co-op bank for years and, apart from being a far more ethical bank, I've never had/heard any complaints about their charging and cannot complain about their efficiency. Luckily I have a local branch (as they have fewer than the major banks it may be a disadvantage to some users) so I can pay in cash easily & their on-line banking is very quick & easy.

I agree - they were really nice and efficient. I do have a branch next door to our Co-op supermarket. If I've read terms correctly, it takes about 5 days for a cheque to clear if deposited at bank or 7 days if deposited at one of their own shops ! :)
It took about a week from start to finish. I admit I find the idea of an ethical bank appealing - I used to think it was a contradiction in terms. ;)
    Thank you for your reply.

I would go for a co-op account like a shot if there were any near me. I don't even think there are any of their shops.

i think they are catchin onto the amounts. a couple of days after i got a late payment charge on my skycard (refunded after complaining) i got a letter regarding changes to my t&c's and it said they were changing the standard charge from £25 to £12.
