Deep in debt, will sell house but can't stop creditors harrassing me!

I am living in debt hell. I had an accident in my employers carpark which left me with painful knees, later diagnosed as possibly genetic ostreoarthritis ,osteoporosis (bones snap like twigs) ,severe scoliosis (bending spine)and ankylosing spondolitis (arthritis of the spine) but luckily my solicitor was so inept they managed to keep an engineer out for 3 years until they could have the place fixed safety wise:rolleyes: . For someone who went to a gym every other day for years that was a bit of a downer. It wasn't so terribly bad as i can roll with the punches and I decided to become self employed and work from home. I sold middle to high end jewellery successfully for a couple of years but people are not buying anymore so incomings have reached almost nothing . My disabled mother lives with me so I can't just live in a pit until I sort myself out as she is a pensioner and needs at least some small quality of life (although that is disputible under the current labour government!). I owe £46,000 and my mortgage is £55,000 but my house is worth around £130,000 and I have put it up for sale to cover everything. I have paid religiously for years and am now behind on 1 months credit cards payments only, the mortgage, loans etc are all paid.
I'm sorry for rambing on but what i really need to know is :
Is there any way for creditors to stop hassling me as i am intending to pay them back as soon as my house is sold and have told them this. The worst are mbna and amex, 2 days after missing my payment on amex i was warned that they are allowed to send baliffs! I will pay them everything but i need the time for my house to sell. I live in a very popular area near good schools etc and houses sell fast-usually within 2 weeks- but in northern ireland it takes 12 weeks for a sale to go through . I am ringing cccs again tomorrow (haven't been able to get through yet) and hope they will help.
Any help, advice or just encouragement would be massively appreciated.
Thank you.

Just wanted to say hello... I am a newbie here less than a week but already things are falling into place. BUT one thing I will say, what seems a good idea on day 2 doesnt always fit by day 3 and so on. I dont know about you but I am in a rabbit in headlights state of shock, flipping from euphoric enthusiasm to depths of despair and back again. I also have one of my debts (total 80k plus 60 k mortgage on 145 k house) with MBNA. I got a really rude man who seemed to delight in belittling me, or at least trying to. He cant make me feel worse really.. .... but I did point out that it wasnt actually helping anything to just be downright rude.. in my most school marmly voice and just stuck to that line... I didnt respond to his hectoring other than to say I was going to be dealing with CCCS and this was a courtesy call to let them know the situation. Quite frankly I hope some of those people find themselves in hospital ... and the nurses and medical staff are some of their clients :T especially if its a proctologist :rotfl:
On my huge experience of 5 days post light bulb.... if life wasnt a rollercoaster before it sure as hell is now, so dont try to fight your feelings when you are somewhere safe... its ok to keep a front up to the outside world, but keep somewhere that you can let yourself work through the emotional stuff.
BIG HUGS"Many a mickle maks a muckle"... but just how many mickles do you need ? dont suppose a piece of string and a ha'penny will do this time:rotfl:0 -
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Just to know that someone else isn't living the life portrayed in magazines, tv etc is a massive lift for me. I really do appreciate your bothering to reply to this post as at the moment I am at bottom and find my responsibilities daunting. My mummy and daddy( I know, english people keep telling me we are the only ones to not say mum and dad but over here it is a sign of respect-it's either that or we really are sad!) have only basic state pensions so i have to pay a lot of their bills and find it hard. Social services won't help as my parents have me (and 7 other children but let's not talk about that!) so refuse certain benefits. It doesn't help my sister is a manic depressive and refuses to deal with real life. I am sorry for sounding so depressing but I am still confident I can sell my house and sort this without claiming anything or begging for my debts to be reduced. My attitude is sod them, i've sorted my family out for years and will keep doing it without begging.
remember- don't let the b*****ds grind you down

Chunky I have friends in norn Iron, so I know its the norm to tough it out, especially anyone who lives there during the troubles. Are you sure your mummy is getting all the help she could ? I am not experienced enough to say where to ask for advice but there are loads on here who are... it might mean waiting.. it might mean bumping your thread up. As you will see quite quickly, the number of people in the same or even worse position means that some threads seem to get overlooked. Dont think (though it is so easy to) that you are being overlooked... its not that. However you resolve your problems, dont forget to be kind to yourself. Knowing my friends, it isnt easy for a Norn Iron man to come all shary about things, so give yourself a big pat on the back for getting this far. And do call CCCS again. I did earlier this week and got 5 Sept as an interview date.. they also give you a reference number. Just give that to the MBNA black shirts and say you wont have any more news until after your meeting with CCCS.... so in some respects you are only following CCCS's orders.. a concept those b&%^ds will surely comprehend :rotfl:"Many a mickle maks a muckle"... but just how many mickles do you need ? dont suppose a piece of string and a ha'penny will do this time:rotfl:0

I found your comment on mbna very uplifitng but forgot to ask:
what is a proctologist ??? and does it involve pain (PLEASE it does), if so you've got my vote.
I have just noticed you are asking about selling your house to meet debts and i do genuinely believe it isn't a terrible idea (i'm doing it).
I would like to wake up one morning and want to get out bed instead of praying it is actually 3am and i can hide for another while. I don't see the point of waiting for a loan company or morgage company to get there first and sell your house for much less than you can get yourself. I have asked cab and their exact quote was " you're in a really bad position with no benefits and you actually own your own house-bad move "(i swear. pure quote) Although longterm renting isn't ideal I want to be able to answer the phone without dread. There are mortgage companies (not scary, dodgy ones) who can get you a 100% in the future even if your credit rating is a bit rubbbish- you tend to pay between 0.5% and 1% higher than just average but at least they don't rob you blind.
According to the laws of chance life has to get better - it's just when i can't get.Whoo hoo! norn iron club member# 395!0 -
a proctologist is someone who doesnt mind looking at a$$holes all day in fact they boldly go where only some men go,,, and get paid for it !!!"Many a mickle maks a muckle"... but just how many mickles do you need ? dont suppose a piece of string and a ha'penny will do this time:rotfl:0

I can't believe you even got the spelling for northern ireland right - you REALLY do have friends here. I'm impressed.
Over here we tend to have the attitude" you screwed up sort it out" so I will. I have run away from bombs etc-literally- so debt can't be that big a thing.
Just remember, if you're healthy you can always turn things around- it's only money.
Please try and stay positive because you never know whats around the corner (i love platitudes,me)
lots of luck and i hope you win the lottery :jWhoo hoo! norn iron club member# 395!0 -
you realise that proctologist thing is scary! Can't we make them live in norn iron instead- foreigners always freak over here! I'm not sure but it may be the black balaclava thing ;0)Whoo hoo! norn iron club member# 395!0

Keep your sense of humour, its not something you can buy no matter how wealthy and will sustain you and others. You know the phrase it never rains but it pours.. well to paraphrase the words of one of my Norn Iron friends.. never mind pours.. its passion"Many a mickle maks a muckle"... but just how many mickles do you need ? dont suppose a piece of string and a ha'penny will do this time:rotfl:0

I'm sorry if it sounds patronising, i don't mean to (that's what mbna are for!) but you have to remember when the worst comes to the worst it really is only money. The most important things are your children and your partner . I spent my childhood running from bombs and bombscares and it just shows you that all you really want are your family safe and healthy, everything else really is a bonus. I have my nightmares- hourly it seems- and know the sick feeling and chest pains . The very worst thing in the U.K seems to be selling your house (we are part of the u.k so i'm in with you) but it's better to sell and have your children grow up in a decent rented house than with you being frightened/depressed/sad or angry-i've been there and done it (parental divorce-sorry;seperation, people over here don't tend to actually divorce) and once you have no debt you really may be a happier parent. My mummy was always frightened of bills but once we left and rented a house she became more relaxed and i grew up so much happier as i was not always searching for signs of fear on her face. We are all taught from an early age we must absolutely own our own house but very few european countries subscribe to this feeling. You are NOT a failure if you have to start again, you are Not a failure if you need help. Secured lending alone in the u.k is standing at over a trillion pounds and over 15 million people here are seriously worried about debt. I understand that reading about others peoples debt doesn't make it better but it does make you feel that life is bl***y difficult and you aren't alone.
With regards to your pets mine is the only thing that has stopped me accidently on purpose falling into the sea as well. Sometimes people don't understand the huge attachment and responsibility.
Try to remember that lots of people make misjudgements and come back. My brother had no money,no job,had to sell his house yet 10 years later now owns a good house on an average wage. We can come back from this. Always have hope.

Hi Chunky,
This is my opinion.. Dont pay anything on your credit cards.. If you have a DD for them then cancel it..
Next, call them, ask them to freeze the interest with immediate effect..Offer them a minimum payment of £ 10. per month.. They are going to say NO. to both of your requests, BUT dont take no for an answer.. tell them thats all you can afford.. and they will accept honestly.. the idea is to not give in to them..
Your credit cards are not a priority debit, and not worth the worry..
Contact http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/.. they will help you.. And dont worry,
Good luck0
