Capital 1 customers - please read!

Hi folks,

If anyone has a Capital 1 card & pays by DD I'd advise you to check that your payment has been received...I pay this way & this month also paid an extra £50 on my debit card. DD was debited from my account last Friday (4th August) and STILL hasn't reached Cap 1. Phoned them on Tuesday as I has checked my account and DD payment was still not showing & the bloke I spoke to said they were investigating why there was a problem with their systems (appartently there's something like 68,000 accounts that may be affected he said!!!! - then proceeded to tell me that if I paid a further £18 they would refund the late & overlimit charges, applied due to THEIR mistake!! (i paid it to bring my balance down a bit & also to use against them later!!:D - then told him he flippin better pay them back & remove any nasties on my credit file as it was their fault, not mine )

If you have a Cap 1 account, I would suggest you check carefully & also check your next statement...I think if I hadn't rang them, they would have just tried to slip those 2 charges through & hope I wouldn't notice!!

Just be wary, most companies warn you to allow up to 4 WORKING days for payment to reach your account after your date of payment. Having said that, if you paid during working hours last Friday then it should show on your account today (Thursday). It may be worth your while moving your payment date each month a couple of days earlier if it's possible to avoid this in the future. Stick to your guns on the charges though, even if it is through gritted teeth when they state it's a gesture of goodwill!

  • They actually determined the payment date when the DD was set up, and it clearly states on my bill the date it will be taken on or after to allow the payment to reach them in time.

I have not had a late payment fee in over a year from i set this up, the point i was making is that they have admitted to me that it was the fault of their system that the payment was not showing, the charges were applied automatically, so if you do not check diligently enough, chances are that they will sting you for the charges!

I agree with you & there must be thousands of people who never really check their statements & get hit with this sort of nonsense. Seems like a good earner!

Yes I agree, it is really important to check the statements. Well done for keeping on the ball with Crapital One.

I remember recently reading a post that advised against setting up direct Debit for credit cards because if you want to end the agreement, it has to be done by them. Where as with bills, loans etc, you can cancel the dd at anytime.
Do a search on here and you will find it.

Maybe switch to doing the payments manually and sign up for Martin's text service to remind you?

Actually no. You can cancel any Direct Debit regardless of who the payee is. It is in the DD guarantee. What I think your confusing it with is regular payments with your credit card. Only the payee can stop these, beware any AOL users as they take up to three months to do this.

  • just a wee update, called Crapital one again on Friday & checked Txs....NO REFUND!!!...so got really mad, spoke to one of their call centre monkeys (no offence to any call centre workers intended!!) & apparently their system is "currently unable to process refunds" (but is obviously able to apply them I note, as they went ahead & charged me £40!! )

The plan now is to ring them as many times a day as possible (they used to ring me between 8 -10 times daily to ask the same dumbass questions over & over when i was about £20 overlimit!) so just going to give them a taste of what they like to dish out!!:D

Also asked how much interest they will be refunding me....got a stunned silence then a "what do you mean", so I told them I want a clear breakdown on my next statement of fees refunded and a calculation of excess interest debited by them of an artifically inflated debit balance (ie due to the fact that I paid £140 quid off, but the interest was calculated on the full debit balance), and wanted the refund of this clearly stated on my account also....I can be a royal pain in the rear when i want, & no one deserves it more than the banks!:rotfl:

......anyone else been having this experience with Cap 1 recently??
