Well, if both your current manager and the manager at the other branch want you, I would definitely prepare to put in an application regardless of what HR say. Make it a good one, don't think "Oh well it should be a walk-over".

They MIGHT be concerned that to give you 2 branches just for the asking when you previously had 1 was a breach of their Equal Ops policy, which might say that all 'new' jobs must be advertised internally and externally. I say that because my understanding is that those who are now doing 2 were doing 2 before, whereas you weren't.

And they MIGHT be trying to work towards a position where people only work in one branch for some reason. Who knows?

But first I would, as I said before, talk to ACAS on Monday. Plus your union, if you're a member (sorry if you've already said!) Because redundancy does have extra complications, and they might spot something in your favour, or in the company's favour, and they should give advice on raising a grievance if you have to. Do you have the company's grievance procedure?
