I'm clueless about growing veg ... we bought the tomato bags last year. Does anyone know what the difference is? Are the tomato bags a different type of compost, or have they just been treated with tomato food?

I was going to buy tomato ones this weekend, but they're a lot more expensive that these lidl ones.

No real difference, just get Grow Bags from anywhere [you do get what you pay for unfortunately]

I used Lidl ones last year, but s0d the environment, not peat free, worked just fine

Whatever ones you get remember you will need to feed your toms once the first fruits have formed

  • On a similar note, I could do with a couple of BIG bags of compost. Whats the best deals around on these at the moment, does anyone know?

I'm after good stuff, not the bags full of wood chippings.

    TIA
  • I used the organic ones from aldi last year for my first year of veg growing. kept feed, slug pellets and anything else i used as organic and may not have had the best crop but I felt good about what i had grown. :T Glad they are in Lidl as I missed the Aldi ones the other week as veg area was not ready for them and then of course aldi had sold out when i did go to get them. Thanks OP

Take a look in Homebase - they have a 10% event today and tomorrow, and I'm sure I saw a flyer for a 15% one over the may bank holiday.

We've used their own brand organic for a few years now - 50L bag for £4.99, 4for3 - and have been happy with it for the price - ok, some Miracle Grow we were given a few years back was a finer grade, and better in terms of product, but the peat content alone was enough to make me feel bad, and the Homebase stuff isn't at all bad compared to some others we've tried.

I bought a pile last week from Aldi. Pretty good IMHO.
