Tax Refund

Hi,

My DH has received a form in the post from his Union.

The form is from The Tax Refund Company.

They are offering to investigate if he is due a refund but they keep 40p out the £ of any money awarded.

I'm sure there is an MSE way

Can anybody help?

Forget them!

If he feels he is due a refund then simply contact HMRC and ask for it - will cost nothing.

However would there be a reason that he might be due a refund? If he is on PAYE and has not changed jobs recently it is failry unlikely that he would be due a refund.

He's a baggage handler at an airport, I think it's to do with tax relief for wearing and laundering a uniform for work.

If he has a uniform with a logo on that he's expected to wash then yes he's entitled to an extra personal allowance.

Simply phone up HMRC and ask for the allowance - his tax code will be adjusted. You can also claim back 6 years.

HMRC will do this all for nothing as well.

It doesn't have to have a logo, it's a common misconception, it just has to be clearly a uniform - would a member of the general public recognise it as a uniform in the street?

If it's got logos or corporate branding this will however turn otherwise ordinary clothing "into a uniform". The logos/branding must be visible and attatched to the clothing - a removeable badge won't do.

You can claim for protective clothing too, which I imagine your husband will have. This doesn't need any logos at all because it fulfils a safety purpose.

Some trades have a flat rate allowance that is applicable and may be higher than the flat rate allowance, however I don't believe there is a nationally agreed allowance for airline staff.

Write a letter explaining exactly what you qualify for, detail the years and ask for a cheque as a refund, this is better than a tax code change.

Definitely he should just contact the HMRC. It's all straightforward, and free.

True, it's important to know why you are claiming though because they will turn it down if you don't know the rules.

Typically HMR&C would ask if his uniform has logos, he'd say no and they would say he couldn't claim. In fact he can claim logos or not because he has protective clothing, this is why so many people this he has to have logos.

Also they would change his tax code when in fact he is better off with a cheque.

HMR&C will give you help but they won't necessarily give you the best advice.
