Which laptop??

Hi everyone,
I hope some kind soul will be able to give me a bit of advice re purchasing a new laptop.
My laptop is quite old ( compaq Evo N610c )which was bought 2nd hand just to see if I would use it. In fact, I find it invaluable! Neither of us are 'techies' or very pc savvy, hence help needed. OH wants to buy me a new laptop for my birthday, but we don't know what to get, and the shop assistants just seem to want to sell us the most expensive they can!!
My main use is surfing the' net', e-mails, and a bit of buying and selling on ebay.
I don't download any music or the like,( wouldn't know where to start!).
I don't need 'all singing and dancing', just a basic, run of the mill model with a decent memory. Trouble is we don't know what is regarded as decent size memory!
Sorry for waffling, but i thought the more info I give, the easier it will be for someone to help.
Here's hoping, and many thanks in advance!!

Its better to have and not need, than need and not have!!:)

I would recomend one with Windows 7 and at least 3GB of ram

apart from that anything will do far more than you want

this acer for £349 should do just fine, with free carry case and free delivery

Thank you so so much for that, I was looking at one that is 2GB , but was worried it wouldn't have big enough memory. Will give the one you recommended a look, as OH has basically left it to me! He's just paying the bill!!
    Many thanks again.

If you have a £350-£400 budget and price range, I would be considering laptops which have the Intel Dual Core (or higher) processors rather than single core AMD's. With laptops it really is a case of you get what you pay for, so you need to decide how much you are willing to spend and then we can help you find the best specification for your money. Personally I would recommend having a budget of atleast £450-£500 as this will open up many options for you and you will get more value for money because the specs will be significantly better and even though you might not use all the software and gaming programs to utilize all that power, it will help keep your laptop more current and capable for longer as newer programs do require more and more processing power to run efficiently.

There's a very helpful thread on laptops on the Techie board, which I've just been looking at - I'd suggest you have a read there, and maybe ask them, they seem really helpful!
