A friend of mine got married on a Thursday in a borrowed dress when her husband's dad was diagnosed with a very imminent terminal condition. It was a no brainer....

You'd be daft to borrow that much money for a wedding. I would have thought having had defaults because of a redundancy you'd be scared witless of over committing again especially in this climate. If you can save £10k in a year then do it, pay off the HP and get some money in the bank so redundancy doesn't equal defaults.

Thank you for all your comments and yes the most important part will be for my mom to be there, just trying to find away around not having to cancel everything we had already booked and paid deposits for as this means losing money anyway.

Thank you for the kind words though.

Im really really hoping that you took out wedding insurance its only about £50 and im my opinion its well worth it.

If i was you id want my mum to see me get married, even if it only cost me £100. If you really really do want the "Big Frills" wedding you could always do this later with renewal of vows or blessing in a church.

Please please please avoid the loan sharks as it really isnt worth starting married life in massive debt and struggling to make repayments.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck and I wish you every happiness in the future.

I can only agree with all the previous posts.

Last Thursday my partner and I found out that we can officially live together as a family (long story, custody case etc). My elder brother and sister are happy with their partners but never want to marry. My partner has 4 children and I see them as my own. My father has had half his insides out due to a very aggressive cancer and each day we keep on fighting.

My mum's not getting younger either and she's poorly with diabetes. When I proposed to my fiancee I didn't think we would be able to afford it until it actually came to it. We've booked the reg office, 35 friends+family with kids for a sit down meal at a venue (football club executive bit!) and a nice buffet for 100 people. She got her dress for £50 of Ebay and loves it. I'm wearing my business suit. The boys are getting theirs from ASDA when they bring out their cheapo stuff next month. My mums making the cake (she's a crafter - going to make her so happy). We got her two daughters dresses of Ebay too, for £50 total. Oh, and we've booked a £70 hotel room for the night.

Total cost of everything for us - £2k. We could do it cheaper by catering ourselves but don't want to put my aeging parents through thator other family - oh, and we want to enjoy the day.

OP, forget the "dream" wedding - I knwo it's your day (don't lose sight of that) but what's the most important thing for you?

Congratulations, and good luck. Give my blessings to your mother. :)
I am firmly across the line. I won't impose my values on you if you keep away from mine.

Do what I did many years ago and !!!!!! off up to Gretna Green.

Years later, it is still a talking point - people are much more interested about the fact we got married there than having had some lavish day that would by now be long forgotton. Much more memorable and special IMO.

I'm sure if you explain your circumstances to to companies concerned, they will move the date forward for you, or maybe if they are kind hearted, they will give you your deposits back. It won't hurt to ask.

Downgrade what you can. So long as there is a ceremony, that's all that matters.

How much have you paid out already?

I was about to suggest the same.

It's all a question of sorting out priorities. If you think seriously about it, you will soon work out what is most important. I'll give you a clue. It ain't an expensive wedding.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
