I think Penny's point is that if people can't multiply by 10 then something's very wrong.

£0.12 per 100g = £1.20 per kg -it 'aint hard and the kids should be able to help:)

Its not JUST that the prices are in kilos for some, per 100g for others and by pack for yet more - its also the shelf edge labelling  How many supermarkets put shelf edge labelling for the items above the shelf and the item below the shelf right next to each other? It makes it all so much more confusing and people in a hurry tend to pick up something prepacked because it has a price on it. Its about making all pricing transparent so that people can make a proper considered opinion rather than having to take 5 minutes to work out the real cost - especially if you are in a rush or have small people with you.

I do agree Pen that basic mental maths shouldnt be an issue (even if it all too often is) I send my boys off to work out the best deal on items, nowadays they are so good at it I rarely have to check!! DS1 came back with three smaller bottles of fabric conditioner the other day, having worked out that it was cheaper because they were on offer than buying a big one :T

However - there is a very real need for a thread that has the different type of focus crux has - ie what one might call "optimum health eating" at a reasonable cost.

Surely everyone's definition of "optimum health eating" is going to be different? :)

So - I'd be delighted crux if you wish to run such a thread - and do hope that all comments about shopping for whoopsies/loads of ways to spin out mince/etc (though very useful) won't be recycled on this thread - because it would have a very different emphasis.:D

All those ideas have their place on a thread concerning cutting down a food budget I would have thought, regardless of whether you are talking about "quality" food or not, whoever's definition of "quality" we are using. :)

Incidentally i got a Free range duck crown whoopsied tonight. Down from £9 to £1.50. :j

Shopping for whoopsies is ok if you are a housewife who can go shopping at will. I'm a busy working woman who has to fit in housework & cleaning around my full time job.
I shop on Saturdays & try to make sure I don't need to go during the week. I write menus for the week & shop to them, so i have everything in. I then freeze all the meat & take it out each morning before I go to work. So whoopsies while great for some won't work for full time workers who have a limited shopping window. If something is marked down when I'm shopping & I can have it for dinner on Saturday or freeze it then fab, but I couldn't go regularly looking for them, i don't have the time.

I am happy to put lots of veg in my mince dishes because its healthy, but I'm never going to bulk out mince with oats or anything like that. I buy 5% fat healthier mince any how.

I do believe there is a place for economy gastronomy on MSE - look how much interest the programme generated.

    .

Hmm, I'm pretty busy myself. I still get whoopsies. :)

Anyway that's irrelevant. I was simply saying that I don't think things like whoopsies or bulking out food should be "banned" from any thread on reducing shopping costs.

    As am I. :)

Then you will know that whoopsies are a happy find, but not regular & you can't budget your weeks shopping with them.

Everyone has different perceptions of whats good value. For some its about the cheapest possible meal, for others the cheapest possible healthy diet, for others fine foods at the best price they can find.

They are all good value, relative to they family whose budget they suit.

I like sun dried toms, balsamic vinegar, asparagus, things like that. I try to buy them at the best prices, for me thats good value:money:

All perceptions of good value are valid, there is no wrong or right way.

I'm not disagreeing with you on any of these points simply wondering why whoopsies etc have been deemed to have no place on this thread. :)

Anyhoo. I'll watch the thread with interest.
