Squashes will keep through the winter. The only thing is that the skins will get tougher. But you're not eating the skin anyway!

Ooops. Are you supposed to peel them?

I always roast mine in the skin and eat the lot.

Depends how old they are! If they've been stored for a few months, you would want to peel them!

I don't bother chopping it up, I just cut in half, scoop out the seeds, brush with oil and then roast for about 45 mins on 190.

Or as Gordon would say "halve, scoop, oil, roast"

haha brilliant. I thought I was the only one getting frustrated with his style on the "F" word

  • The seeds are also edible. when roasting the squash I put the seeds on a separate tray and toasted them for a short while (can't remember exactly how long), maybe about 10 mins max. Anyway, unsurprisingly, they have a nutty taste!!! Yummy!

Well, squashes and pumpkins are from the same family, so I guess the seeds would taste quite similar.

Just got three butternut squashes from Makro today reduced to 75p!!
I'm going to make a hotpot with one, and I've got a cake recipe for one of the others, so one left over, I know it'll keep for ages though so not worried about that. Just wanted to ask - if I save the seeds will I be able to 'grow my own' next year? Do they have to be dried out? Or can I make a necklace out of them like my mum used to with melon seeds? TBH though would prefer to eat them than wear them:rotfl:

children would love that as a holiday idea - what did she do, just stick a pin through the seeds? but how did she thread the cotton through? are the seeds quite tough or is it easy?

Think my mum should be coming over later today, if she does I'll ask her how she did it. Possibly soaked to seeds to make them softer? - I can't really remember, so I'll check with her.
