Nationwide Missed Payment Help

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me please. I am going to call Nationwide later today but I wanted to get some advice first. My boyfriend and I have a mortgage with Nationwide and have done for about 3 years. They take the mortgage payment directly from our joint Nationwide account on the 1st of each month. We currently are in our overdraft with our Nationwide account but on the 1st of March there was enough money left in our overdraft to take the mortgage payment. For some reason they didn’t. There is nothing showing on the account to show that they attempted to take the money at any point in March. The payment was taken as normal on the 1st of April. I have received a letter today to say that our account is currently in arrears. Because this account is purely used for household bills as there was never an issue that our account was going to be taken over the overdraft limit it was not something I checked before today. We had not just switched mortgage products or anything like that. I know the argument will probably be it is our responsibility to check the payment went out but I had not reason to believe it would not. So, to cut a very long story short I plan on ringing them later to pay the one month arrears but I want to ask that our account does not show that we have missed a payment or anything like that. I know that missing a mortgage payment can have a serious effect on your credit and seeing as Nationwide never attempted to take the money which was available (albeit in an overdraft) I am hoping I can argue the error sits with them and not me. Does anyone know where or stand on this or can advise me?

Many thanks
Katy

OH has a mortgage with Nationwide with payments collected from the flex.

Usually DD's go out early hours of the day so for a DD on 28th if you checked your account at 9am you would see that a DD has been collected, mortgage payments on a flex go out last thing at night fo if you check your account 9am on the 28th it wouldn't have gone out but check it at 9am on the 29th and you'd see that the payment has been made.

In your case if there wasn't enough money in the account at the end of the 1st (including overdraft limit) there is no attempt to collect the DD saving you rejected DD charges on your flex and rejected DD charges on your mortgage. At the end of the 1st was there still enough money in there? Did you have any visa transction going though? or cheques waiting to clear? I'm sure they will say it is up to you to check your accounts to make sure the payment has been made but if there was enough money there they should fix it for you and amend the credit records if it's their error.

Must admit we're rubbish at checking statements, I've got a pile that need filing - maybe I should get that done now.

Hi, not really the same situation but similar. We have a nationwide mortgage that comes out of our flex via the invisible DD collected on the 22nd of each month. I switched my direct debits to another bank and when the other bank sent me the list to validate the mortgage was not on it. I didn't bother as I wanted to keep the Flex account for travelling in Europe so I figured leaving the mortgage their was a way of keeping the account active.

Anyway the first month my DDs starting moving I was keeping a close eye on both accounts, by the 26th the mortgage payment had not gone so I phoned Nationwide. The person could not explain why the payment had not gone but advised me to wait until the last working day of the month and if it still hadn't gone then to go into a branch and pay cash! I didn't think much of this advice but didn't bother arguing.

Sure enough by the end of the month it had not gone so I went into the branch and paid cash. Then on the 2nd of the following month I checked my account and the mortgage payment was sitting as a debit on my account on the 31st and this took me well into my overdraft.

Took a bit to get it sorted out as they went on to charge me for overpaying more than £500 but it was finally sorted out. But they had no problem taking me into my overdraft for the payment!
