Help/Advice on Presentation

Hi all

Have been invited to attend an interview for a position and I am required to :

Deliver a simple presentation to the panel lasting no longer than 10 minutes explaining how your skills, competencies and personal aptitude based upon your past experiences will enable you to fulfil the requirements of this position.

Am going to knock something up on Powerpoint but am lost as to what sort of layout, design, length of slides/pictures I should be using.

If anyone has knowledge of this please could you advise me urgently.

Thanks.

And my three top tips would be.

Show how you have brought real business benefits to to your last/current employer. Real as in £s profit or savings.

Don't read out what's on the presentation word for word. Use it as a cue and as a hint.

Express how well you get on with people and how that helps outcomes being delivered

Keep the PPT simple, no animations, no music keep bullet points to a minimum. If you use pictures make sure they justify their existence on the page

Speak clearly and slowly, do NOT mumble, and talk to the audience not the screen / projector.

And remember, just because you CAN do something in PowerPoint, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Using 16 different ways to get the slides onto the screen is NOT necessarily an advantage, and spare us text tapping out one letter at a time! If you have background, make sure it's not distracting and that it actually adds something. Pictures the same.

    Best of luck ...

Thanks for the advice so far.
The position is for a Finance Assistant in Adult Services.
You will be a member of one of the teams within Adult Services Finance. The finance unit is responsible for undertaking financial assessments for customers in receipt of Residential/Nursing and Community care services, financial administration of direct payments, personal budgets and client financial affairs. You will be required to plan and organise your own workload to meet strict deadlines. You may be required to visit customers in their own home.

So should my presentation be split into 3 parts:

    Skills
    Competencies
    Personal Aptitude

How can I show my previous expreience of these in words? Could I use pictures? If so which ones, from where and how?

Seems odd to me - is making presentations going to be part of your role?

Sadly, I think many organisations now think 'interview = presentation' whether the job requires it or not.
I can only endorse the previous answers - KISS (keep it simple stupid) as far as the Powerpoint is concerned and never cover more than 40% of the available space on each slide. Don't use pics - they are not 5 year olds - keep the body of what you want to say within your words and make the slides aides memoire only.

Well it is the local council !!!

And no the job does not involve any sort of powerpoint presentation work.

The ability to work flexibly and be able to adapt to changing workloads is crucial. You will also be required to plan and organise your own workload in order to meet strict deadlines, be self-disciplined and an effective team player. You must be able to communicate effectively in a professional manner to a wide range of customers. This is a busy and complex service and you may be required to visit customers in their own home, a clean driving licence and use of a vehicle for business is therefore desirable.
Success in this role will require someone with the following competencies and experiences:
    • Excellent Communication skills
    • Good numerical and IT skills
    • Knowledge and relevant experience of Financial assessment process, Welfare benefits and Debt recovery
    • Experience of maintaining administrative and computerised systems
    • Ability to understand a wide range of legislation, policies and procedures

So any advice on how many slides I should have and what words should be on them?

You could interpret "presentation" as simply one-sided talking, rather than as a formal PPT production. As part of a career development course, I did a presentation on my skills & competencies where I just used a flipchart and wrote up bullet-points to emphasise each skill as I spoke about it.

If you do really really want to use PPT, then I'd suggest only one or two slides, with half-a-dozen bullet points on each. You could opt to have them appear as you speak about each item, so that people don't read ahead.

    Thanks Tigsteroonie

I've been looking on the net and apparently if you use pictures it's far better than text and grabs the attention of the interviewers and you stand out from the other candidates.
