I want to go back to Uni

Options
Please advise me.

3years ago i had everything in place to start university. I did start but sadly dropped out. I was paid grants etc. I didn't pay back. Now I want to go back. Will I be able to claim grants for the course I want to do? Even though I didnt pay them back?

You could try asking on the student money saving board http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=25

But if you do post there then to get the most responses it might help if you can expand on your post a bit such as:
what grants you received and how much, how many years you completed, whether the new course if the same as the old one. If you also had loans and whether or not you have started to repay the loans.
A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give
or "It costs nowt to be nice"

Things that will effect your Student Loan:

How many years of Further/Higher (the university one) you have attended.

Thats pretty much it really. Were you asked to repay grants when you first dropped out? You should have been unless you dropped out at the end of a year, when you wouldn't have then been asked.

my understand that grants are money that is paid and not expected to be paid back whereas a loan is money that is expected to be repaid back?
  • I wasn't asked to pay it back. I did a 1yr Access course which lead me to do the foundation degree.

The worst part is I only stayed for 3weeks! I was given all the loans/grants available to me. It looks really bad doesn't it?

In theory yes, but they're given on the basis that you complete the year. Usually if you drop out you will be asked to pay back a proportion as you weren't entitled to them

not necessarily, you can get the length of your course +1 year. Therefore if you only took 1year of funding you should be ok.
