Life After Debt - A Diary of a Debt-Free-bie

Hello!

Now that I'm debt-free (as of July 06), I feel that I need to keep a watchful eye on my spending habits so as not to revert back to my previous DFW status!

Walking about the local shopping centre today, I really had an urge to splurge especially as the sales are on at the moment! Fortunately, I had only paid for one hour's parking, so I didn't have time to spend!

I did treat myself a little though. I'm starting a degree in Septembeer (as a mature student, I must add!) and so I bought the pretty, nice stationery rather than the cheapest. But it should last me three years and it's not as though I'm spending money I don't have! Plus, as I used my GE Credit Card (gets paid off in full every month) I will have earned up to 3% cashback on it!

So I hope no-one objects to me doing a post-DFW diary but I think the next few months will be harder than I originally thought. When I graduate, I am determined that I won't be in debt but it's going to take some effort and a lot of will-power!

  • Well done, been there done that and it is hard getting used to it. I too have allowed myself a credit card which gets paid off every month and it's such a nice feeling. I am sure that none of the DFW would begrudge you sharing this with us.
  • I'm in the same boat now, and your 'but it'll last me three years' comment struck a chord. I'm spending a little more now (though never again on credit here), but find myself justifying every penny I spend (no bad thing). It's definitely weird being debt-free after the struggle it took to get here. I feel like I'm at a point where instead of seeing money as simply a means of acquiring necessary items, plus the odd luxury when there are enough funds, I've almost started to regard money as The Enemy. I don't think this attitude is any healthier than the 'buy now, pay later' one which gets many into debt in the first place.

It's amazing how much guilt you can attach to a tin of own-brand baked beans if you were extravagant enough not to buy it from Lidl :)
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!
