Cooking a whole chicken in the SC.. mine always smells funny!

Options
As a veggie myself.. when cooking a roast chicken in the oven or walking passed the cooked chickens in the supermarket I always think they smwll scrummy!

However everytime I try it in the SC the whole house stinks and so does the chicken!

It's a shame cos I like cooking it this way as every bit of meat just falls off.

Anyone else have this problem or is it my nose?!?!

One of the things I like about the slow cooker is that it doesn't make the house smell. I used to hate making stock on top of the hob because of the smell, but now I do it in the slow cooker and unless I open it, there is no smell.

Sorry that's no help to you Girlpower. :o

& I thought it was just me GIRLPOWER! everyone else seems to love SC chicken

I've done a whole chicken in my SC a couple of times & tbh I find it absolutely foul (no pun intended :o)
as you say it smells awful & I also find the flesh repulsive, it's too soft & squidgy & all the flavour ends up in the liquid (great stock though!)

so it's back to oven roasting for me :)

can not understand it myself. got it fresh yesterday and cooked it over night.. could have gagged this morning.. could smell it from upstairs.

We have the MR 6lt the same as most on here.

but what ever I cook you can normally smell after about 6 hours of cooking.

Thank god it not just me! I threw the stock as I thought thats what was smelly, stripped the bird let it cool then placed in airtight container in the fridge. have made the childrenn sandwiches off it for lunch and when I opened the container the smell was still there! Although they have still eaten it and said it was nice.

The thing is, you cannot roast anything in a slow-cooker. Roasting requires dry heat (if we're going to be pedantic roasting is cooking something in front of a heat source like spit-roasting, what we do when we roast meat is to bake it.The Americans call it baking rather than roasting).Anyway, what you are doing in a slow-cooker is pot-roasting. This is cooking in a moist heat, and a pot-roasted chicken smells different to a roast/baked chicken.

I think the smell of roasting chicken is my favourite smell in the world. I see no point in doing a chicken in a SC and you're right the texture is mushy.

SCs are a useful money-saving tool but they are not suitable for cooking everything in - nor are breadmakers for that matter:D

but... If I cook a joint of beef in the oven it smells the same as cooking it in the SC.

Yes, you're right:rotfl: I sometimes do beef in the SC actually and it's very good,I tend to dry it out in the oven. Still, I prefer roast chicken to slow-cooked chicken - ooh that crispy skin mmmm.

I must admit I was sceptical about how it would turn out, but after 'hearing' so many people here raving about SC chicken, I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't expecting anything like an oven roast, but didn't expect it to be so vile
it reminded me of the way people used to boil chicken to death (figuratively speaking :D) when I was a child, I'd eat it, but I didn't like it done that way. I don't think the chickens were so reliably tender for roasting way back then

I agree about the appliances, they're a useful adjunct in the kitchen, & were invaluable when I had no proper cooker for a year, but they're no real substitute for conventional cooking & baking

I felt exactly the same as you, made me feel ill _pale_ & I couldn't eat it in the end
the kids seemed to think it was ok though, no complaints anyway. but maybe they were ok with it because they didn't actually smell it cooking?

I have to agree too. I don't like SC chicken and I think it makes the meat too sloppy and the skin is foul too. I tried it a couple of times but now it's back to roasting for me too. I'm not keen on beef in it either as I think that tastes stewed but pork is nice if it's cooked in apple juice or cider.
