My Mum always had a cast iron???? very heavy - (well, I'd hate to drop it on my toes!) - black bakestone on which she baked welsh-cakes. Probably had it all her married life so it must have been over 60 years old. When she died two years ago I asked if I could have it - and it's been in the garage ever since. I don't suppose she'd used it for the last five or six years so as you can imagine it's in a bit of a sorry state!
Today I have scrubbed it in several changes of hot soapy water using the wire-wool scrubber my husband keeps for the barbecue. The water is still not clean! I have now dried it off and am wondering what to do next. Should it be oiled?? Any advice welcome - I just want to bake welsh-cakes for myself!

Don't wash it any more!!
Having scrubbed it, you will now need to season it again see here so it becomes non stick again
Then just a gentle clean in hot water only in future0 -
Hotcookie - thanks so much! It was covered in grot and a fair bit of rust, but from now on I'll treat it with love and respect!Resolution:

Heat it up and then grease or oil it.
When it is nearly cool, wipe it with kitchen roll tissue.
We wipe ours with tissue after use then store it.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0
