Implants or denture??

I have just had my upper right 5th out (lost 6th and 7th ages ago) and dentist suggests I have a denture with two teeth on right side and one on left where upper right 6th is missing.
I would rather have implants if I can afford them but my dentist keps pushing me to have a denture. I see him again again next week when he takes out my stitches as I had an antral fistula?? As I take diazepam before I see him I am never quite sure what is going on.
So really what I need to know is do I need a denture first and then go on to have implants, do I have to wait for the gum to recover before I have either and is their a good reason for me to have a denture rather than go straight to an implant guy. (I have enough bone for an implant).
Hope someone can help
Thanks

HI
I'm off to have my top teeth out today as I'm going to have implants, I hate the thought of dentures but I have to have them for a few months while my gum etc heals.
I believe it is possible to have implants straight away if conditions are perfect enough bone etc
I had a small denture before and I found a dentist who made me a running bridge 5 years ago, which was a godsend, but thats failed now. which is why iI'm having implants
I've never been pushed to have a denture, quite the reverse0 -
I meant to say, there's some brilliant dentists here who will be along soon I would think, to advise you0

But in the meantime, you'll have to do with me!

If these are the only teeth that are missing, then it is questionable whether you need anything at all.
It does seem a rather small denture.
Are you private or NHS? Just wondering if he's trying to push the treatment up to the NHS band 3 rather than the 2.
You really need to have a good discussion about your options whilst you are in a state to understand. Maybe make an appointment to do nothing but discuss options would be a good idea, then you wouldn't need spacing out!
Don't be pushed into anything your not happy with. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Hi Lolly, have you had your bone quality and quantity assessed for implants as you say you have enough bone for an implant?? If so, who was this assessment with?? There may be problems if you have had problems with the fistula you mention, this can happen if the floor of the sinus is close to where the roots of your teeth were and if so there may not be adequate depth of bone present in which to place an implant.
As Toothsmith suggests, the best thing to do is have a discussion with your dentist when you are fully lucid.
Good luck0 -
Thanks Toothsmith and Teerah and good luck Chaos,
I had my tooth out in hospital as the roots were very close to the floor of the sinus and there could be a hole which the surgeon had to repair. I havent spoken to the dentist since but I have a lot of stitches so assume he did the repair.
From what I understand from my dentist he said that if I didnt have anything to replace upper right 5 and 6 then I could lose my bottom 5, 6 and 7 as teeth stay healthy by chewing? I have already lost upper left 6, and 7 has come inwards across the space so I will probably lose that soon so I dont realy have much to bite with.
Looking at the OPG before treatment my dentist thought I had enough bone for implants but I havent discussed this since. He doesnt do implants and would refer me on to someone in Harley Street where they cost £2500-3000 each! He does fit dentures and said a 'nice denture' would cost around £500? I see a private dentist in North London.
Is this an average price for a denture with two teeth on one side and one on the other?0 -
Hi
My implants will cost £2100 for 2 and £640 for each extra one needed. thats at the Bupa hospital.
I know I could probably get it cheaper but my dentist works with this one and my dentist is excellent, so I think it's worth sticking with this man.0 -
How do you feel this morning Chaos - in pain or just sore? That sounds a very good price, I bet you are not in London!
I would feel a lot happier having implants in hospital (had my surgery at Enfield Nuffield) and your price sounds brilliant.0 -
I had a horrible night but I had a 75 mile trip home so that didn't help.
I was just coming back to tell you that price is for the implants only, you know the rods in the bone, then you have to pay for the dentist to put teeth on them
It is all a lot of money. but personally I'm obsessed with my teeth, and I'll pay any amount.
It only takes about an hour for the implant bit but then you have to wait a few months for healing before you have teeth on them.
I'm having a bone graft which is an extra £400
I'll give you my msn if you like if ever you want to chat about it0 -
Hi Toothsmith and Teerah
I dont think I am going to go the denture route but could you tell me if £500 is a good price for an upper denture with two teeth on one side and one on the other?
Thanks0 -
It does sound about right for London.
I understand why your dentist is recommending it now too. Teeth with nothing to chew against can deteriorate, but it is not a quick process.
So long as you get something back against them within about 18 months or so, it shouldn't cause too many problems. The earlier the better though. How to find a dentist.
