Its my birthday on Friday and we usually have a whip-round in work and I will end up getting a present which I don't really want. So I'd much rather send the money to someone who needs it. Does anyone know of any other companies apart from oxfam who would offer such a service? Many thanks

Instead of a whip round you could ask them all, or whoever is organising it, to ask them to bring in something to eat from home- a tin of soup, packet of pasta, etc. and then donate it to your local homeless shelter.
This way they might be shamed into donating their own whip rounds in future, if they know you are giving it to charity.;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

There's also
worldvision.org.uk and sendacow.org.uk (not only cows but other things too). They are similar to the Oxfam scheme.0 -
There is Maternity Worldwide too... https://www.maternityworldwide.org - ask them to send a certificate on receipt of a donation, they will be happy to do so. They are intent on improving the chances of mothers to be in the developing world survive pregnancy and childbirth. They also train local staff to fix fistualas...that's when a woman tears during childbirth. Normally it doesn't get fixed and the woman is left doubly incontinent and subsequently ostracised by her community. It is a miracle for these women. They ask for £15 which will ensure the safety of a woman in childbirth.0
