Ideas off the top of my head:
Local radio station (even the restricted license volunteer ones, I'm sure they would take him and it would be interesting)

    Local TV news team

    Local newspaper

Local football team (even if that is in admin or something similar, he'd maybe have a passion for it.)

    Local theatre

Unfortunately, placements like these are unbelievably popular and are often arranged nearly a year in advance. This lad has only a few weeks before he's due to start and will need to be far more realistic in his expectations.

    Someone please help.

My 15 year old son has been trying to gain a work experience placement but just keeps hitting brick walls. Most places are telling him they either do not offer work expeience placements or they are unable to get the insurance to cover someone of his age to participate in an placement. He is obviously quite frustrated by this. Has anyone had success in this area or able to suggest where we could try? He is due to start in the next few weeks!!

my DS (15) is going through the same in his chosen work field.

He finally got a yes from the police for I.T. work, when really he just wanted to work in aviation.

Everyone used the same reasons, those that bothered to reply.

The school should of given him a spreadsheet with a list of companies he can contact, ds had this, yet loads no longer have work experience or it's the insurance thing.

My son did his we at a special school. He struggled to find something and wasn't sure about the school but he loved it. The children were profoundly disabled and it did upset him a bit but the school loved having boys as a couple of the little boys responded so well to them. He was in the hydrotherapy pool every day. He has decided to do nursing which I never imagined him doing. My daughter did hers at a local nursery and it convinced her that she didn't want to work with children (she had wanted to teach little ones.) She was left to her own devices with groups of three year olds. Made my hair stand on end as she was only 15 and did cookery with them. She wouldn't cook at home as she was always scared of getting burned and then there she is making cakes with three year olds. All in all it was very useful and gave them a good insight into future careers. I hope your son finds something suitable. Where abouts are you, might be able to help if you are in my area.

Due to start what? At 15, he's going to be still at school. As others have said, WE for school children is normally something arranged through the educational establishment they attend.

wasnt for me, my first WE i had to think where i wanted to go and arrange it myself, might have changed since then

My son is 14 and in 3rd year (Scotland) and his year do work experience in June. He has still to get something but is supposed to do so himself. School does have a list but it is mainly nurseries.
  • At 14 I did work experience for about 6 Saturdays at my local sealife centre which I loved, then when I finished school after my exams at 15 applied for a job there for the summer and got it no problems as they remembered me :) My birthdays in August therefore I was one of the only 15 year olds at the end of school if you're wondering, everyone else was 16 but proves it is possible to get work/experience young!

My son (now 18) had a fabulous work experience placement when he was 15 that had sounded really boring at the outset. He had filled in forms and said he wanted to work in 'administration' surprisingly - I don't think he knew what it meant at the time! Anyway, he got a placement with the Insitute of Chartered Accountants in their head office. It was quite daunting as it was a towering modern building, he had to wear a suit and he was terrified when he went for interview. However, the actual placement was wonderful. He was there for two weeks (I think) spending a couple of days in each department. He did everything from filing, to helping check applications and marking exams, sitting in on meetings, to a careers fair at a university. The staff were very welcoming and he was even taken out for a 'breakfast' by a couple of the lads on his last day. And amazingly, he was given £40 at the end of it, as well as a lovely testimonial.

I wish I'd written a thank you letter at the time - it was such a positive experience. It was arranged by his school: I wouldn't have considered it remotely suitable!
