Saving money on the standby switch - any ideas?

Can I run a DFM stylee question past you wonderful people?
I moved into a shared house about 4 months ago with two other people. I now pay a third of the electricity bill, which I'm happy to do. The problem is that the other two earn a lot more than me, so think I am being unreasonable in asking them to turn the TV off properly instead of switching it off with the remote (they more or less walk past the TV to leave the room!).
Is there anything that I can say to them which might get them to help conserve energy, (and help me out financially along the way)? I've asked them politely, but I've only just moved in and they've been here a while...I even left an article on the coffee table about how much energy as a nation we waste on standby, but to no avail, they just asked me to move it.
Has anyone got any clever ideas?!!
