AQE - Papers are for approximately 38 grammar schools (mainly protestant) -3 papers each of an hour's duration which are taken on Saturday mornings. Each paper is maths and english only. Marks from the best 2 are taken and scores are given in quintiles (which no-one really understands) You sit the exam in your choice of AQE Grammar School - it doesn't have to be your first choice school that you would want your child to go to, you can choose one that is near. If memory serves me correctly the cost is £35.00 for the tests unless you are on free school meals.
PTTC/GL - Papers are generally for catholic schools although Lagan College are only accepting this exam and Victoria College are accepting both. I think you only do 2 of these papers and they are on the one Saturday. They are multiple choice. Candidates are given a grade. These tests are free of charge.
My advice to anyone with a child in P6 is check with the schools you are interested in your child attending which system they are using, don't rely on the primary school principal.0 -
Hello Happymummy, I have a daughter in P6. I dont get her tutored but I do work with her myself as she struggles with maths. I do about 1 hour 3 or 4 evenings a week with her and it has made a huge difference.
You say that your own maths is bad, have you considered maybe doing a class yourself in basic maths? The reason I suggest this is because I also have a daughter in form 4 so if you think P6 maths is difficult, you'll be horrified when you see grammar / secondary school maths !! And when she is in grammar / secondary school, that's when she will really be turning to you for help with her maths.0 -

has anyone heard anything about this site - just wonder if its worthwhile ???0 -
We did not use a tutor. Luckily our primary school set tests once a week after school which helped a lot (using old 11+ papers).
We sourced practice papers from the usual outlets such as Easons, WH Smith and free ones from Belfast Tele. However by far the best papers (IMO) was from Belfast based pmppublications.co.uk These papers mirrored exactly the format of the AQE exams. We gave daughter one test to do per week (cranked it up to 2 per week approx 2 months before first test) and then went over all the ones she got wrong. Kept all scores so you can easily monitor progress and used the "incentive" approach of £5 for all scores over 75% and £10 for scores over 80% (cost me a fortune at the end of it all!!!). We timed all tests sticking to AQE format of 1 hr to help her with time management
By not having a tutor we found that we could be more involved in her progression and preperation. She scored very well in AQE and told us she thought AQE papers were easier that the PMP ones (took that as a good sign)
Good luck, trust in your childs ability, don't feel you are disadvantaged by not having a tutor, and finally RELAX - It will all work out.0 -
Hi I'm exactly in your position with a son in P6, currently in a catholic primary school but wants to try for both Friends/Wallace and Rathmore so will have to do both sets of tests!! Like yours he is stronger in english than maths, and I think panics a bit when he finds the maths tough as is used to grasping things easily. I got from the Library a series called 'Murderous Maths' by the same folk who do the horrible science and horrible history series which has helped a lot as it explains maths theories and problems through literature - based scenarios! Ideal for those stronger in english! Also go to the belfast telegraph website as they have 6 AQE papers to download for free!! I'm not going the tutor route but may live to regret it as I'm doing extra time with him myself and we're both finding it quite frustrating at the moment...! Good luck, one day we will look back and laugh...Life's a box of beads - rainbow coloured and full of surprises!:D0

Rolo, your child did have a tutor - they had you! Tuition is a process. You can't say it didn't happen just because it wasn't paid for.
Not that what you did wasn't admirable.

we just got the pmp publication books delivers this morning and im really impressed with them too! our school recommended them as they use them so its teaching her along the same lines as she sees in school.
I am keeping the test books good and clean and having her write the answers in a jotter........in true MSE style we are keeping them to use with our 2 other daughters lol
i have been sitting with her every night too and finding im learning along with her but i have to say the explanaton books really have changed how i feel about helping her as it takes all the doubt out of 'am i telling her the right way of doing this'!
to make matters worse our youngest is going for an operation in the morning and all i can do is think about square numbers and how to work out top heavy fractions lol at least its helping take my mind of the op!
thanks for all the replies again,it helps to hear we are all the sameit takes more energy
