Next door's dog

My next door neighbors bought a small dog about six months ago and every time they leave it alone it howls and barks continuously. I was hoping that it would grow out of it but it does not seem to be the case.
Some Saturdays they will go out and leave it alone and it will be howling for 6-7 hours. It's starting to drive me insane.
I've mentioned it to my neighbors but they don't seem to know what they can do and I'd rather not sour relation with them too badly since I have to live with them.
Since I'm not a dog person I have no idea if this is normal behaviour.
Any advice?

What a RUFF situation!
In all seriousness it sounds like the dog is either lonely or bored or both, have a google and you may be able to suggest some things for the owners to doAlways ask ACAS0 -
It's their dog and therefore their full responsibility to ensure that it doesn't bother anyone else - they sound a bit thick and clueless to be honest, leaving it for hours on end."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

Failing that...introduce them to your newly found admiration for Led ZeppelinFeudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
It could be seperation anxiety. They'd have to build up the length of time they leave the dog, from a few minutes, then 10 minutes and so on until the dog gets used to being alone. It's something they'd have to invest a lot of time in though and it's not going to be a quick fix thing.
Do they realise how bad the dog sounds? If you invite them in for coffee so they can hear what you have to put up with, they might be more willing to try things? Here I go again on my own....0 -
It sounds like the dog has seperation anxiety or is bored or lonely. They really should have someone come in to let it out &/or walk it, is that something you could do? They really need to start by getting it used to them going for just a few minutes & only go back in once it's not barking, making no fuss of it before leaving or on return. Could they leave it with a stuffed kong or chew toys? Maybe leave the radio on for it? If it can see out it might be barking at whatever it sees too x0

It might have been left with the TV on. And tuned to Jeremy Kyle or Live From Studio Five... Now that's torture for anyone, human or pet...0

Yeah, I also have that impression of them.0 -

Its obvious that they have bought this dog without thinking about whether they are in a position to give it the attention it needs. I am annoyed at their lack of planning.0 -

I particularly recommend LZ2, especially the tracks "Whole Lotta Love" and "Heartbreaker"If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
I really wouldn't even consider your neighbours' feelings on this either; they're the ones being anti-social towards you after all.
I'd tell them 'nicely' one more time that the barking is causing a nuisance and then I'd go all-out to record the noise and contact the relevant team at your local council.
And if Led Zep doesn't work, I've some Punk CDs you can borrow.....
Seriously though, don't let them get away with it!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0
