Just made a note of that number - that will help a load of us to avoid the extortionate charges these companies have for telephone calls! Thanks Moggles"Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

The "company" doesnt have any charge for the telephone number - it is your telecoms company that sets the charge for phoning it.... if your telecom company has extortionate charges prehaps you should look to switching provider? All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

The "company" chooses to use these numbers because they receive a payment from the phone company (which, I think, is the point the poster was making)...Astaroth wrote:The "company" doesnt have any charge for the telephone number - it is your telecoms company that sets the charge for phoning it.... if your telecom company has extortionate charges prehaps you should look to switching provider?

If the company didnt profit from the calls they would provide an 0800 number, or in the very least an 0845 number so you could call them at local rate instead of National rate......"Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

They would even profit from an 0845 number as these are no longer local rate!arnie&caseysma! wrote:If the company didnt profit from the calls they would provide an 0800 number, or in the very least an 0845 number so you could call them at local rate instead of National rate......
The company will not profit from a geographic number (one starting 01 or 02) but they will not have to pay for the call either (unlike 0800).0 -

Not so - I run my own company and we have an 0845 number that we pay for, callers are only charged at the local rate when they call us.0 -
Then you are being ripped off! There are plenty of providers out there who will give you a 0845 number with no charge (just google).Tootsie_Roll wrote:Not so - I run my own company and we have an 0845 number that we pay for, callers are only charged at the local rate when they call us.
If you are a large company you can earn money on 0845 numbers - this is exactly how PAYG dial-up internet works.
Also BT charges more for 0845 calls than national calls on their basic tariff. The cost of calling a 0845 number is 3.95p per minute during the day and 1p evenings and weekends. A BT Together 1 customer could ring a true national number for only 3p per minute during the day and talk for up to an hour for 5.5p evenings and weekends! If the customer is on BT Together 2 or 3 the difference is even greater!0 -
I had reason to call Mint at the beginning of the year, I was kept on hold for over half an hour:mad:, I wrote and complained, they credited my account £10.00:D , Thank god my balance is now Zero!!!Debt Free!!!0

Why not register with 18185.com and get free national calls but are charged 4/5p. connection charge for up to 1 hour.

Then you would be doing your clients/customers a far better service by just providing a normal landline (01/02) number to call you and save yourself some money in the process!Tootsie_Roll wrote:Not so - I run my own company and we have an 0845 number that we pay for, callers are only charged at the local rate when they call us.
Using call over-riders such as 1899 and 18185 allow landline numbers to be called free of charge (barring a 4p connection charge) and many people also have call packages which allow landlines to be called free of charge at certain times. Calling an 0845 number incurs a charge per minute for the duration of the phone call so works out more expensive!0
