Having a chat with the kids earlier I was saying that we wore school uniform P1 - 3 then no uniform until started secondary school in 1977. My husband recalls similar, different schools and towns. Does anyone remember if this was because of the troubles or trial policy as uniforms have been the norm since.
Just wondering really as can't explain to kids why they disappeared and came back again!

I started school in 76/77. The school had a uniform but only a handful actually wore it. For some bizarre reason my parents bought me a uniform in P6/P7 at a time when anyone who had a uniform had progressed to wearing their own clothes. The shame.
I'm glad uniform is compulsory now. My eldest has just turned 11 and is a real fashion victim. I would be tortured if he wore normal clothes to school. Likewise the 7 year old just lives for non uniform days and the excitement and drama leading up to them is just too much to take.
To answer your original question, I really don't have a clue. :rotfl:0 -
No school uniform at Primary school. Then onto Grosvenor in 1969 HOW LONG AGO OMG very strict on uniform and overall look (hair length, badges and even had to shave in 6th form)

Thing is, when I started school they were very strict, tunic, beret and gaberdine, then suddenly there was none! Don't ever recall my parents saying why!0

In the primary/junior school I went to for most of my 6-11 education I had no uniform.
Then I started secondary & did, but I only went to that school for 2 years, then moved to another, that didn't have uniform.0 -
No uniform at primary, but a snazzy grey sweater at Randalstown High School. (RIP)Well I Love Tv And I Love T. Rex, I Can See Through Your Skirt I've Got X-Ray Spex0

I don't think any Primary schools (except maybe Prep schools) had uniforms until about 20 years ago, though all Secondary and Grammar schools always did.0

Definatley there was a uniform at my primary school long before even I went there as there was a glass cabinet in the foyer which showed the early uniform which was even more antiquted and the one we wore, so I'm guessing maybe early 50's or even before.
Husband remembers cap, short trousers and blazer early 60's.
Then suddenly early 70's they weren't complsory for a few years and died out in our primary school, then obviously came back into vogue again.0 -
No uniform in our primary school. I started school in 1973. Our secondary school had a uniform but not many people used to wear it.
I found this old picture of my school and didn't even realise there was a school tie! I'm wearing a checked skirt and a cardigan.0 -
I started primary school in 1974 and we had no uniform.0
