I need help in fixing a mattress

Options
I'm moving out of my flat and the mattress on my bed is, well, worse for wear. I used to store things under my bed and would bend the corner of the mattress back to get at them - I know, I know, that was a very silly thing to do. So now the mattress is kind of lumpy as the springs have obviously been bent out of shape. There's a kind of ridge down the middle now!

So, is there anything I can do? I've been using a mattress topper to sleep on which has made the bed comfortable, but that doesn't help in terms of moving out and leaving the mattress in good shape and ready for the next tenant. Should I try flipping the mattress upside down and bend the corners in the opposite direction to see if they can pop back in shape? Or should I resign myself to having the cost of a new mattress knocked out of my deposit?

Tim Deegan is the mattress man round here :)

incidentally, might you try freecycle for a new one? Rather than splashing out?

Replacing the mattress myself isn't an option - it has to be the same one that came with the room.

Ah - is there any particular way your landlord would know it wasn't the one the bed had originally? Just wondered :)

The mattress was new when I moved in three years ago, so it's likely. If it has to be replaced by him, then that's one thing, but I think it will be glaringly obvious.

Surely your landlord won't expect someone else to sleep in the same mattress? Eurgh that's yeuch. OK before anyone jumps on me, I know we all sleep in hotel beds, but that's for two weeks, max, not a year or more. Yeuk Yeuk Yeuk.

but he won't still be expecting a brand new mattress as it has been in use for 3 years. I dunno - i just mean if it was me, i would get a mattress off freecycle and put that on the bed. Thay way you don't have to possibly pay over the odds for a mattress ?

tell him yours broke and you got a new one over a year ago - i can't see how that's unreasonable :) It's only a slight exaggeration of the truth - and I'm sure he will be thinking " great, saved me buying the replacement last year"

I agree with zippychick, he'll be grateful you got a new one, if it's that bad. You can just make out you did it out of the goodness of your heart?

Just turn the mattress over. Don't try bending it the other way.

The chances are that it was a cheap mattress anyway, so he wouldn't expect it to be in good condition after 3 years.

Most landlords change the mattress when the tennants change as a matter of course. Our local student landlords do even if they have only been used for the one year. Three years is a long time in terms of the cheap mattresses that most landlords buy.

Turn it, if you want to leave a fitted sheet on it to disguise the contours. If he tries to charge you for it, dispute it. He is unlikely to anyway.
