I think its a safe area but there are some tatty parts of it. It would be better for commuting to Wells as its on the Wellls Road. I think it would take around 50 minutes to get to Wells from TM.

Thanks very much - I will just try and live in one of the nicer areas! It seems pretty perfect to be honest, within walking distance to the train station and should cut out most of the traffic to wells

Whether you choose Brislington (lived there and T) or Totterdown you'll be in reasonable distance from Sainsbury's (Bath Rd, Brislington), M&S Foodhall (Avon Meads Retail Park (not far from Sainsbury's)); Tesco (Brislington) and Asda (Bedminster).

I moved recently and checked (via Google) city and county police reports reports on anti-social behaviour for an area - I found that some reports name the roads and the number and type of anti-social behaviour reported. It might be worth checking.

That's true, but you'll probably feel you can never live anywhere if you read them too closely! :rotfl: And if there seems to be a lot of theft, remember that can reflect that it's a nice area, and someone worked their way down the road taking their chances.

As I said, we live on the edge of a posh bit. Well, we're IN the posh bit, but the not so posh bit is just over the road, and people just don't respect these boundaries, you know. In the 10 years we've lived here,
    • DS1 and DS2 have both been attacked, mercifully not seriously
    • DS1 had his bike stolen from him,
    • Our car was stolen
    • Our car had its windscreen smashed
    • Our car had its tyres slashed
    • Our car had a tag added to it
    • Our car was hit by a car speeding down the road being pursued by the police
    • Our garage was broken into two days in a row and our lawnmower was stolen
    • Our 'office in a caravan' was broken into and computers stolen
    • There was a fatal shooting at the end of our road
And STILL people fight to move into this area, and to send their children to the local schools - well, not so much the secondary school because they built a new one but drew the catchment area so as to exclude this precise area which didn't go down too well, I can tell you.

And as I said, we work in St Pauls, have done for the last 10 years. We've had our car damaged once by someone driving too fast in crowded streets, and DH is propositioned at regular intervals.

So, which is the 'nicer' area? You tell me ...

Geri as you seem to know a bit about the area, is there anywhere you would recommend? Also how long is the commute likely to be by car

Edit - after doing a bit more research it would seem that the south of the city is a bit more dodgy, is this the case? Would it be feasible to live in the city (say beside temple meads) or is the traffic going to be too bad to get in and out

Some parts of south Bristol are a bit rough but Totterdown and the bottom end of Knowle are quite nice, IMO - my friend lives over that way. I'm an east Bristolian but if I were to move south of the river, that is probably the area I would go for (or Bedminster).

You could live in the city centre but there are very few houses (mostly apartments) and prices would be high (obviously I have no idea what your budget is) and you will get a lot more for your money by just living a few miles out.

I don't drive so I don't know how long it would take to commute. We go to Wells on the bus and it seems to take ages, but that's buses for you!

Thanks very much - by the sound of it were off to Totterdown!!

Budget isnt really a problem as we both have jobs that pay decently and have no dependants but it would be nice to start to save for the first time in my life

Thanks to everyone for helping me, ive only spent a day in Bristol so I would be lost without this inside knowledge

Well, on your second day in Bristol, if it's nice, get yourself on the open top bus tour. Admittedly you won't see much (anything?) south of the river, and it won't give you any help with deciding where to live, but it's an excellent introduction, especially with the right commentator, to "How to speke krek Brizzle". Can't find a link to the book of that name, but this is useful. Oh, and here's one of the books I was thinking of, can never remember its name.

Could be worth getting a copy of this week's Venue, PM me if you'd like help with that.

There is an article on The West's Best Places to Live. Take it with a pinch of salt (large): apparently among the bad points of living in my part of Bristol is that we lead lives of quiet desperation, with not as much wife swapping and satanism as you might expect. ??? How much wife swapping and satanism did they expect? :rotfl:
