Free child safety equipment from your council if you live in a Surestart area

If you live in areas that they count as "deprived" and therefore more likely to have accidents, your borough may provide free safety equipment. Our council has a home safety officer who came and gave me loads of corner covers, fridge locks, cupboard catches, socket covers. He charged me a deposit of £10 for a brand new safety gate which he fitted.
worth a call to your council to find out. You don't have to state income or anything, it goes on the ward where you live.

Thats sounds great, our youngest is almost one now and into everything , I have been meaning to get safety stuff for a while but not got round to it and especially need a gate cos she can climb stairs now if I leave the door open. Any idea who I would need to contact or is it just the home safety officer?
ThanksMoney's too tight to mention!!!0 -
I'm sorry but it's nothing to do with being more likely to have an accident!! I live in a surestart area where this scheme operates and my daughter is no more likely to have an accident than anybody else!! I think what you mean is if you are in what you call a "deprived" area then they assume you would struggle to pay for such equipment, so give you it free. It's definitely not definately!0

I didn't want to offend Yorkshire pudding. It is just how they described it to me as someone living in a surestart area as well. Apparently the poorest (they called them deprived areas) do have more children suffering from accidents. I would guess that this is because parents sometimes cannot afford safety equipment.
My HV gave me the number for the home safety officer but their number was on the council website under the housing section.
Once again sorry for any offence but this is a great idea I think that lots of people are unaware of as the advertising of it in my area for one is poor. There are times when parenthood seems nothing but feeding the mouth that bites you Peter De VriesDebt free by 40 (27/11/2016)0 -
