Foreign currency

In clearing out I have found smallish amounts of foreign currency ($30, €45) - but I'm not sure what is the most cost effective thing to do with them. I know I could take them to the Bureau de change but would be stung with huge charges and poor exchange rates so possibly not worth it? Does anyone know of anything else I can do with them? Ideally would like to convert them and max the amount of £ I get back for them so I can put against my debt (every little helps) but next best thing would be to be able to spend them somehow over here. Can I pay them directly into the bank? Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

If its coins, you probably won't be able to change them.

Some charities take currency...or take to your nearest airport or a local travel agents...sometimes they have charity collection tubs for currency.

Most of it is notes (all the Euros and about $25 of the dollars). With our current level of debt I'd rather have the charity it goes to be me right now :):o But will collect up the change and see if I can find a collecting point - good idea.

The best thing to try to do with it is sell it to friends/colleagues who are going away. I recently came back from Greece with 200 euros (without a "buy it back free" offer), so I sold it to my Dad who was going off to work in Dublin for a week. We were both happy!

It is not a good time to change foreign currency at the moment. Perhaps you will be going abroad again, and should keep the money - at least it's in dollars and Euros (I found a 1000 lire note and about 30 Francs!).
Also some shops accept Euros - but probably at a pretty poor rate.

Have you tried the post office or your bank. I know post office sell commission free but not sure if they will buy unless you originally bought currency from them.

I bank with RBS and they will change back any currency commission free as long as it is in notes.

I bank with the A&L so maybe they'll let me pay it into my account commission free - will check that out. Otherwise will find an RBS branch! Thanks!

I think RBS only change currency commission free if you have an account with them though.
