Loan application for someone else

Hi,

I've just received a loan agreement through my door - address to MR Another - but at MY address.

The paperwork is from LLoyds TSB and specifies that the agreement has been approved and that the funds are awaiting transfer into Mr Anothers account once the signed paperwork is returned.

I've just rung Lloyds TSB who have told me that Mr Another lives on my street, and that the agent has put the wrong house number down on the file for him (they replayed the loan application tape - not to me!). My concern is whose credit file have they checked? And that if this was me applying for a loan, I would not want my neighbour knowing all about it.

Is there anything I can do - Lloyds TSB just want me to 'return the paperwork' - strangely enough when I said I'd probably send it to the Data Protection Commissioner the agent's(that I was speaking to) manager came on the line, said she'd been listening to our call, and that nothing wrong had happened - just an administrative error.

Any advice???

FF

Your credit file is against your name not your address, so nothing much to worry about. Mistakes do happen from time to time...

You do know it's an offence to open mail not addressed to you? (just checking!) If I were your neighbour 'd be pretty annoyed with you! (as well as LTSB)

I wouldn't stress about it, send it back, and check your credit report with a free trial about 2 months from now just to put your mind at rest.

  • Are you sure that you / LTSB haven’t got the wrong end of the stick when you have phoned, it sounds like a sample / illustrative loan application in the name of "A.N. Other", this is sometimes used in unsolicited / speculative loan offers!
 It’s hard enough remembering my opinions - without remembering my reasons for them

No - the loan application has definately been accepted and funds are ready - all credit checks have been done. I don't even know the AN Other, and I do know all my neighbours in my immediate area.

As to opening 'his' mail, the post came through my door, I didn't even check the address until I had opened it and discovered that it wasn't for us.

It may have Mr Anons name on it - but it is clearly address with our address. A quick check on BT.COM shows me his address - and its 57 houses away from me.

I was on the receiving end of a similar situation in my Banking days. Customer phoned me up to say she had received statements for someone else who lived in her street in the same envelope. This was an automatic sorting error - the customer went to the Office of the Informaation Commissioner and was told that no action would be taken against the Bank, it was accepted as an error and no more (customer's words not mine) with the OIC office saying that they get approximately 75 instances per year of this sort of event.

Its not an offence to open someone elses mail if it has come through your door and it has your address on it - it is only an offence before it has reached its destination.
