Coming to end of fixed period - stay with current lender = no checks?

Asking on behlaf of a friend who's pretty rubbish with money at present :(

They're close to the end of a 5 year fixed rate repayment mortgage and in the last 2 years, fallen behind with credit cards, a loan, AND car finance. They have always kept up the payments with their mortgage however.... I'm guessing they got very little chance of finding a better deal with another lender now, given their 'problems' in the last 24 months, but was wondering if they stay with their current lender, and simply sign up for one of their current offers/deals, will their existing lender do any checks, or assume that as they've paid on time, every month and in full for the last 5 years, they're a 'safe bet' to continue to take on?

Thanks in advance

I just came off my 3 year fixed and went onto the SVR, i simply got a letter stating the new rate and what the payment would be, no checks performed that i was aware of, also did not sign up to anything new from them.

What is the SVR for your friend going to be now???
