Nintendo Wii to play chess

I know nothing about Nintendo (having no children) but I would like to see how much it would cost to buy Nintendo Wii just to play chess with. Chess is a passion of mine and I want to do nothing else with the Nintendo Wii.

It is confusing seeing which type of Nintendo I need to buy and which accessories. Can anyone out there help me?

Thanks.

your basic wii is about £180 these days (probably a bit cheaper on ebay - around £100). I would suggest ebay if you only want to play it for chess.

For that price I would just buy a chess machine.....at least that way its also portable.

why do you want a wii to play chess?
  • dont bother. my hubbie is a chess fan and I bought the wii chess game- we gave it to my niece who is 6! he is a member of an online chess club which is reasonably cheap and seems to keep him entertained for many many hours!

    To answer ncooper1974 and pebbythedog

The reason I thought I would play chess with Wii is because I saw a Wii chess game on amazon which had five very good reviews and this made me think that it may be worth buying the Wii equipment.

So pebbythedog does make me wonder if it was the same game or whether the game for sale now is a new and improved version (or whether the amazon reviews aren't all genuine as I know that people are paid by companies to post product reviews across the internet.)

Another option for me would be to buy computer software to play chess against my home computer but as I sit in front of a computer monitor all day at work the last thing I want to do is sit at home in front of a computer monitor to play chess (or to play chess online.)

So the idea of relaxing on a sofa and playing chess on a much larger TV screen appealed to me.

I am looking at electronic chess sets too as another possibility which would also be far cheaper.

    www.chessmaniac.com is totally free.

OP, as you have a computer, one of the strongest chess programs around is Fritz (http://www.chesscentral.com/Fritz_12_p/fritz-12.htm). It'll cost you much less than the wii, and has many features including a great tuition level, and also the ability to use chess databases (http://www.chessbase.com/). There are databases that contain literally thousands of annotated grand master games (and openings and endings) and are the modern way to study/improve.
