Tara, this is terrible....is there no need for social housing, or homless shelters or anything like that? it seems so...wasteful.

There are 300,000 empty houses in Ireland... population is c. 5m. Most of them will never be lived in.

I agree with you though LIR, they should be taken over by the govt for social housing. They own them, after all, under the terms of NAMA. And yes, it is a shocking waste.

I am pretty sure it is 300,000 new build homes that are empty.

Trouble is new builds just don't stand up to standards for social housing.
We had flats,(sorry a luxury apartment complex) built here at the beginning of the recession and not one has been sold.
It was expected the council may have took them over but no,it was in the local paper that they may have to be demolished as they were just not up to local council housing standard.
Having once bought a new build myself I can understand that.
    Most are rubbish.

We used to love going to South-West Ireland for our hols, but we've stopped going for a number of reasons. The main one is that it's become incredibly commercialised. Every little cafe is apparently now a gourmet restaurant and charging mega prices. Then, they've spoiled the lovely landscape by building ugly, shoddy homes all over the place that they then tried to sell to tourists at totally ridiculous prices. The exchange rate doesn't help, either, so I assume that tourism is well down.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Can't vouch for its accuracy as its not a site I'm familiar with, but there is an interesting table here:

It doesn't look so bad when you look at what the guy said:

"I have no doubt that some loans that will come into the possession of the Nama will result in the demolition of badly designed buildings in inappropriate locations,"

In a nutshell, the oversupply isn't in pockets, its almost everywhere and its massive. Which makes you wonder why they were all built.

Well, if I were them I would announce that every english or irish speaking immigrant with 100,000 savings or a job offer can come to ireland, and have the houses at cost price, and Irish citizenship (and therefore european citizenship) after they had worked for 7 years. Offer it to europe first. Then the world.
