When can I have a normal bank account?

Hello all,
I haven't posted for quite a while I'm afraid, but was wondering if anyone who has been discharged from BR has been able to get a normal bank account. At present I have the Cooperative Bank's basic account. I rang the bank today and asked if I could have a normal account as I have been discharged for over a year now. I was told that I won't be able to have a normal cheque account until the bankruptcy is gone from my credit record, so another 5 years to go. I was kind of hoping that with good behaviour I could get an upgrade!:(

To be honest I think that this is par for the course.

Try applying for an account you didn't owe money too... The cash minder account hasn't bothered me in the slightest, i'd quite happily use it for ever...0

Hello Cinderbrook, I'm sorry but Dojoman is right. It does seem cruel doesn't it, but to be honest coop cashminder does everything bar cheque book and they are being fazed out soon.
Best wishes

I wouldn't be too fussed Cinderbrook, the cashminder and barclays accounts are fine for most people and I can't remember the last time I ever had the need to write a cheque.
I know that's not strictly what you were asking but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it - "non-basic" accounts just mean that the banks can typically make more money out of you by luring you with features you don't need. At least with a basic account they won't be asking you if you want an overdraft or a loan every time you speak to them!0 -
hopeful is right - I feel so much better NOT having an overdraft or the ability to have an overdraft - Everything in the account is yours essentially.
If there is no temptation, there can be no bad outcome!0 -
i agree, the only thing I cant have is a cheque book and you cant use them for most places now anyway, all I need is to be able to set up dd's/so's so the coop minder is perfect for me and hopefully I shall be with them for a long time.

I found them to be very good and quite friendly, as long as the money is in the account they have no issues paying DD's!0
