    Well if you can't save £10k for a car from £50k+ wages then you can't afford to pay back a loan.

    It's about time people saved up and then bought a car.

    Maybe he can afford to save, but maybe would like the car now and pay it off over the next 5 years. It's a bit like what people do when they buy houses with a mortgage rather than saving up to buy one.
