We were at the Jewellery Quarter on Friday to get the Engagement ring resized (for free...).
We enquired about wedding rings and an example was a 2.5mm, heavy weight, court shape (2.6g?) in platinum was £185, or the same in palladium (looks very similar?) was £85. Seems there was a strong recommendation that palladium may become popular, although the price has gone up from £20 a gram in January to £32!.0 -
Just an update in case this helps anyone else in future - we finally went down to Birmingham yesterday and would highly recommend the jewellery quarter to anyone looking for engagement &/or wedding rings.
We both had a vague idea of what we wanted but nothing exact, and found every shop we went in to be extremely friendly, helpful, and not at all pushy - they were all more than happy to note down the details of what we'd been looking at and for us to take the time to walk away and think about things before making a decision.
Typically, after wandering round all day, we ended up buying both rings from the first shop we went in! The name escapes me at the moment but it's on the same stretch as Neweys (they were lovely in there by the way, just didn't have quite what we wanted), a few shops up to the right.
To give an idea of prices, OH went for palladium in the end rather than platinum, which cost £300 in total for a 6mm court shaped band including some engraving / finishing. I had suggested this to him before we went, but it was nice to be backed up by the jewellers who were very honest about it being a good, hard wearing but cheaper alternative to platinum rather than trying to push us into the more expensive option as I felt they did in Goldsmiths & the like.
I couldn't find exactly what I wanted in any of the shops so am having a ring made to order - 8 small diamonds, 0.2 carat in total, on a 3mm platinum band came to £600 after I'd haggled a bit. Think we both have fatter than normal fingers  (he's a size S, I'm a P) which pushed the prices up a bit, but we both got what we wanted within budget when we were struggling to find anything we really liked on the high street which wasn't stupidly expensive.
OH's ring will be ready today, mine won't be finished for a couple of weeks, but they're posting them out to us (costs £6) to save us having to get the train back down there to collect.
There's a railway & metro station right there at the JQ so it's really easy to get to and we had a nice day out (the gorgeous weather helped!) as well as getting the rings. I just can't rave about the place enough, I'm so glad we decided to go :j.0 -
I am glad that you managed to get your rings in the end Vikki and it sounds as though you had a fab time in the JQ yesterday.
I was in the JQ myself last week and discovered that the jeweller that used to make my jewellery is no longer there..the shop is boarded up and smells musty. I did venture into Erics and came out with a set of cufflinks because I need these for my emergency kit.0
