In a nut shell lender essentially seek nerdy librarian types when it comes to lending - the sort that always vote, dont tend to change much, tend to stick at a job / address a long time - just boring stable types really.

Nerdy they may be, but nerdy peeple are likely to pay their debts and are therefore a good risk.

Indeed. I can tell normally within a few seconds if a new applicant wandering into my office will have good credit. If they look like a hiking holiday nerdy pale skinned types, they nearly always have decent profiles.

If they are dressed in gaudy bling with designed names on thier suntanned torso there's a fair chance I'm going to find bad credit.

Sorry but i do not agree.
I am not on the Electoral Role (don't care if i get fined) and i have:

1 x Loan from my Bank (£10K over 1 year)
    1 x AMEX Platinum (Credit Limit: £18K)
    1 x Barclaycard Platinum (Credit Limit: £15K)
    Full current accounts

I think this has alot to do with (as stated above by someone), the circumstances of your life rather than an electoral role score.

Also, a mid-twenties salary when you already have a £15K loan is pretty low income.

How recent are any of the above accounts?

I know as a matter of fact that Barclays Partner Financce automatically decline any one who is not on the electoral roll.

That's hilarious but I'm sure there's an awful lot of truth in it (speaking as someone who actually is a nerdy librarian who would be horrified at the thought of spending a third of my annual income on a car as the OP seems to want to)

    Hi

I was just reading through this thread whilst looking for something else, and thought I'd just mention that I have had problems getting some forms of credit but have joined a local credit union. Not only are they much more willing to lend to me and at lower interest rates (as long as I save a small amount with them) they review each case individually and meet me in person each time, adding advice and a pleasant attitude as well as a loan. A lot of their decisions are based on building mutual trust as well as your credit score. I would recommend trying your local credit union.

I'm a nerdy librarian type earning 8 times the amount I wanted to borrow. Been at the same house for nine years, the same job for 13 years, no debt apart from a mortgage of 20% of the value of my house. I've been on the electoral roll since I moved in in 2001.

I don't smoke, am paid monthly have never lost my mobile phone.

I wasn't refused but I didn't 'qualify' for my banks (First Direct) cheapest rate.

    Go figure that one out.

Oh and I pay Credit EXpert to notify me if anything changes on my credit file..

You know, if they'd advertised their loan rate at 11.9% it wouldn't have been so bad, but to advertise a rate of (from)8.9% is a bit dishonest if hardly anyone qualifies.

They should say it's 11.9% and then, if you qualify for the lower rate (somehow) you'd be as happy as Larry if it were offred to you.

Still, I raided my savings to buy the car and will pay myself back monthly. I guarantee I won't charge myself 12% though!

Barclaycard account was only opened in February 2010 and i have been at this address for a little under three years.

Maybe you need to get your 'matters of fact' factual before you question something you do not know enough about :)
