I know this threads a little old, but I wanted to update it by saying I've decided to move home. I've discussed it with my parents and they're fine with me moving home for 6-8 months to clear my debts, and my girlf friend thinks it's a great idea and is really happy with me for making this decision. 8 Months goes by very fast and before I know it I'll be debt free and saving for a house.
The girlfriend never really comes over to mine anyway, so not having my own place isn't going to be much of an issue.

    That's brilliant, hurrah for parents!

Giving up your own place will no doubt convince the GF too :)

It's all stupid really, I'd been thinking that moving back to my parents would make me look stupid in her eyes but it turns out moving home for a while is the most grown up thing I can do. She's really happy with me for dealing with it but is also saying that she'll believe me fully when I actually move.
I'd move home right now if I could but the parents are on holiday, so don't want to surprise them like that. They have said I can move home so it's not a problem but I think I should probably wait till they're home at least.

Andy I think your girlfriend needs to have a bit more faith in you. You sound a lovely honest guy who is dealing with his debts and trying really hard. Thats more than most people do so well done! Like you said 8 months will fly by! She should start to believe in you more.
I have realised I will never play the Dane! :(

Just wanted to add I think that moving back to your parents is a great idea and I would have thought would convince your GF that you are seriously tackling your debts.
My OH owed a fair amount when we first met, and if he hadn't sorted it out we wouldn't be together now.
He still has a tendancy to spend, but as most of his wages go into the house account he can spend what he has left, he actually transfers his spending money into his account weekly so he can keep track of what he has more easily. He is now more worried than me about owing money for anything!!
Only thing I was slightly worried about is your GF not wanting to know about the debt and salary. I know all couples are different, but I know I much prefer my OH being open about stuff like this, and I would have been more worried knowing he was in debt but not the extent.
Good luck with the move and the repayments. It won't seem like long and will make such a difference to your future!

She hasn't asked about how much but she has the idea it's a lot. She thinks anything over a few thousand is loads, so I don't know how she'd react if I told her was twenty grand.
But by moving home, I can payy of 1600 a month, and have a bonus payment from work every February, so by the end of next February I can have saved about 17 grand. Leaving only a few thousand left over, which compared to what I owe now will be very quick and easy to pay off. So yes it may be ten months in total. But she's patient and hopfully I'll be posting again in a years time with a small update on this after I'm out of debt.
