I have just had a brief phone call with a woman who was after a database assistant for a 2 weeks contract. I passed criteria of the person she was looking for, but then she asked if i had been unemployed for 6 months! Which i haven't, So then it was "oh sorry i have been told by the jobcentre to take someone who has been unemployed for 6 months or over" I cant blame her for this because of the benefits she would receive, But im thinking as most employers want long term unemployed these days why do i have to attend various meetings with the jobcentre when obviously no-one wants to look at me till i have been off work for 6 months.

They do not HAVE to take people who have been unemployed for 6 months, but in some cases the Employer is paid £1,000 for doing so. In my freinds case he would only take the most suitable person for the job regardless of the £1,0000

That really sucks Berffro - hope something better comes along for you soon0

Yeah, I wouldn't want to work for this employer anyway. Basically, she was lynig. DWP don't force employers to take on people that have been on JSA for 6months +. Just more in it financially for employer if they restrict it to this group of people!0

Sorry to hear about that, I do feel for people in that position.
With the utmost of respect, many people who've been seeking for more than 6 months may not be of the calibre of those who find jobs quicker (though many are).
If I was an employer, I'd certainly want to give the right person a break if they'd been out of work for a while (plus there's the cash incentives!), but a selfish part of me would also want to snap up somebody who was freshly redundant, and still armed with the working life mentality.£1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50/£600
HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500
"3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600 :eek:0 -
OP i feel your pain, just pick yourself up and carry on,0

Also, non of the new deal stuff for employers would be available for just a 2 week temp job, so she was talking out of her bum ...Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Thanks for all the posts, I don't really blame the money as she is going to benefit financially out of it. The problem for me really is that most of the work around here is minimum wage, so really anyone could the work.0

They might not be entitled to the bonus for taking on the long term unemployed but presumably they could class the 2 weeks as a work trial with the job centre and then get someone to work the 2 weeks for them for free? I know there is meant to be the possibility of a job at the end of it but would the job centre really care?0 -
That is really annoying, something similar happens here in N.I. They have this 'Steps Ahead' programme, you have to be on benefits for THIRTY MONTHS or more, then you can apply for the job.
Quite a few of the admin jobs I would like to apply for have this condition attached which really sucks.0 -

Where's the 'respect' to those who have been out of work for a prolonged period in a sweeping statement like that?a selfish part of me would also want to snap up somebody who was freshly redundant, and still armed with the working life mentality.
What a load of rubbish. Are you suggesting that people who have been made redundant through no fault of their own would lose their 'working life mentality' if they were unable to find work within six months?
What if a 'freshly redundant' person was useless, but had a current 'working life mentality' - would you still employ him rather than someone who was conscientious, hard working and was good at his job but had been out of work for over six months? That is just illogical to me.
Please elaborate on your interpretation of 'working life mentality' and what your assertion is based on.0
