are they really discounters?

I can't understand why Aldi and Lidl are called discounters. Everything seems not so cheap... Why? Do you agree?

I don't have either of those near me, so have never shopped in them. But I suspect they are like any other supermarket, they have some things at a good price and others more expensive.

I also suspect that many people start to shop in them because they are cheaper for the things they buy, then think/tell people that they are the cheapest. They also continue to shop there for months or even years because they think they are the cheapest without checking other supermarkets. During that time the prices creep up and aldi or lidl may not be cheaper any more.
  • I think it depends on what you buy, we like continental meats and cheeses they are usually good quality at a reasonable price, other things are hit and miss. I find its worth keeping an eye on their offers which can be pretty good. I don't shop in them exclusively though.

Also less choice can mean less impulse buys so I guess that can be a moneysaving aspect for some.

Some things are , some aren't. We shop there because the fruit and veg tends to be much cheaper at those places than Asda and such like plus the milk is a lot cheaper there as well...We can save over £4 each month on milk by shopping there for example. One shop was £7 cheaper than shopping at Asda mainly due to the cheaper fruit and veg..

Yes, I agree that fruits and veg "Super Aldi 6" are real bargain but anything else is quite expensive.

I would struggle to do my full shop in either but I luckily walk past Lidl every day and go in at least once a week to snap up the great offers. Sometimes their veg and fruit is fantasticly cheap (3 peppers for 49p etc, avocado for 29p) and they sometimes have a more 'luxury item really reduced like chorizo or mussels.
Since starting again after beanie: June 2016: Child development DVDs, Massive Attack tickets. July: Aberystwyth trip, hotmilk nightie. Aug: £10 Hipp Organic vouchers, powerpack. September: Sunglasses. October: £30 poundland vouchers.

Did you mean when they are on offer or 30%reduced when up to date?

As they are both German companies most of their buying team are based in Eurpoe. The buy most of their stock in euros. The £ has fallen against the euro hence why they appear not as cheap as they used too.
