Twin mattresses on a single bedframe?

My OH is a chronic insomniac and can only get a good nights sleep on his own. Short of moving into the spare room, his other idea is to buy 2 twin mattresses to put on our slatted 5 foot wide bedframe as he believes he will get a better nights sleep if we have 2 separate mattresses.
we recently stayed at FILs house in a double bed with 2 memory foam mattresses on 2 separate bedbases linked together hence the idea.
I don't really want to buy new bedbases as I want to keep my old bedframe and dont like divans. Twin beds, or a wider bed, would not fit into the space available.
Just wondered if anyone else had been through this and what solution they had found?
