    Um ^^^^^ what?

They are legally titled to the money back, its there money which they overpaid in error and the employment rights act allows them to recover this.

I would suggest to them a repayment plan, leaving would make matters worse as said above they could just reclaim it through a county court.

I don't think there is sifficient information to determine that yet.

The circumstances leading up to this error are unknown.

eg If the OP got an offer of employment that said they will get this allowance and 2 years later the employer discovered they made a mistake.

it is true that the employer cannot make deductions to make this up without agreement, UNLESS there is a clause in their terms and conditions allowing for recovery of overpayments.

However, not agreeing to the repayments in the absence of such a clause isn't likely to enhance your career prospects, and any organisation paying London weighting and relocation is likely to have such a clause anyway.

Many thanks for all your replies!

The other thing that annoys me is now having £2000 less a year! And with a young family that (for me) is a big hit in my monthly wage. No chance I can afford to repay them just over £4000!
