  • I have a £17k deafult on my credit history, that I have been paying £110pm for since last september.

I have just negotiated a partial settlement figure that I can afford. Its been agreed and will stop any furher chases from them & other parties (confirmed in writing).

However I just checked my credit rating and its gone up to excellent, with me working on my credit cards etc..

Now im really confused with what to do, is it better to settle, or keep on at the monthly payments. I fear that although I really want to get this behind me, it may adversely effect my rating by paying the partial payment !

Please, any advice very greatly appreciated ?

It will be marked on your credit file that it was partially settled which could affect your rating but it’s difficult to say by how much. It’s best to contact the credit reference agency to find out exactly how it could affect you so you can make an informed decision.

Obviously you’d also need to take into consideration how long it would take you to pay it in full and offset this against affecting your credit file.

    Kind regards,
    Pavan

    Hi

Wonder if you can help. I started on a debt management plan in 2006 at first with CCCS and then self managed. My credit card accepted the debt management plan and stopped interest and fees for a year. They then started adding them again and added nearly £800 before defaulting the account and passing it to Apex. Now I only have this debt left to pay off and have £2600 left to pay which I have been paying at £100 a month. I have received £1200 from an inheritance and have offered this to them in settlement of the account but they will not accept it. I have asked them what they will accept as I may be able to raise more but they will not make me an offer. Where do I stand and what can I do to get them to make me an offer to settle the account?

Hi lxpeanut and thanks for your post.

Unfortunately there’s no set rule when it comes to settlements and it’s difficult to guess at what they will accept.

If they won’t offer you a settlement figure you can keep offering more up to the amount you can raise.

If you’d like some more detailed advice you can call our free helpline.

Found this which might act as a rough guide. Its allowances for an IVA but at least will give you a ball park figure

    Hi,

I'm about to start the process of a DMP and have 2 pets - one is a horse and one a greyhound. Will they try and make me get rid of my pets? Unable to sell horse as its got a fractured leg atm so it is worthless but obv costs money per month. Will they make me send the dog back to the rescue centre?
    Thanks
  • Hi there, I wondered if you can advise me please? I am currently paying less than the minimum payment on three credit cards, simply because I cannot afford to pay more currently. I wrote to all three and made an offer to pay less than the minimum amount, which they accepted, and I have now been passed over to their various debt collections teams respectively. I have been doing this now for about 6 months. I have not missed a payment and always pay on time, albeit the lower amount. Does this mean I will have defaults registered against me; and if I am continuing to pay could I dumpsite them? I can't seem to find a clear answer on this anywhere and would appreciate some advice!

    many thanks!

Hi there and thanks for your post.

Rather than tell people what they should be spending it’s better to budget exactly what you spend – this way it will better represent your situation rather than making it a form filling exercise.

If you’d like some more guidance please get in touch.

    Kind regards,
    Pavan

  • My situation is that i have a loan i got in 2005/2006 and i now have £7000 left to pay. I am about to finish my current job (in OCT) and after that i am starting my own company of which i envisage not producing money for many months. By Oct i want to be debt free so im confident about my future. I will have about 60% of my final loan amount saved by Oct so My question is...Is there any way of dropping the final amount so i can get it all payed off with that 60% ish amount i will have saved? Is there any way of contacting the bank and seeing what they can do? Its Barclays bank.

    Any advice would be amazing...

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum and hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm overwhelmed with financial difficulties and just don't know what to do.

I have been struggling for some time yet coped by using overdraft and credit cards but overdraft and credit has now run out. I tried a consolidation loan a couple of months back but this was turned down.

I don't have an excessive life, all my income goes on bills and debts but its now got to the point where I don't know how I'm going to eat this month and as for next month, bills won't be able to get paid!

I just don't know what to do! I'm thinking of going to CAB next week but came across this forum and maybe someone can give me a glimmer of hope. I'm looking for solutions that do not affect my credit rating, I've worked hard to keep this healthy, and worry if debt crisis plans will affect this? Saying that I don't want to borrow anymore so maybe a healthy credit rating should be the least of my problems...

    Any advice greatly appreciated...

    Thank you.
  • Hi there, was hoping you could help with a question.
When I was 18 I was offered loads of credit, lived on my own and worked and thought it would be fine and I'd be able to pay it off, but as I wasn't very organised I was often late with payments and then charged late payment fees which put me over the limit and was then charged over limit fees. This happened a lot with simply be and viva la diva, and one of my accounts with them is now up to £900 from what was originally only a £300-£400 credit. These accounts are now with reliable collections and CAB arranged a repayment with them several years ago. Our local CAB has shut down, and so when the arrangement was recently due for review I was unable to go to them and am now paying about £15 a month off each. I want to know if there is any way of claiming charges back from these as with the banks. I've not claimed back personally before but I have heard other people talk about it and wondered if there was a similar option here, and the best way to deal with it? Also I was paying off a loan to natwest at an arranged amount again set by CAB, which I was paying into one of my bank natwest bank accounts as advised. (overdraft and loan, all account closed and payment was to go into one of the closed accounts) This went fine for a while, then quite a while ago the payment was rejected as the account didn't exist. I've not heard anything from Natwest for years. What do I do?

    Thanks
