Car insurance for discharged bankrupt

My son was made bankrupt in 2007-since then he has worked as a driver for a building firm. He is being made redundant and as he lives in a village with no public transport he needs the use of a car to find a job and buy a car. When Itried to add him to my car insurance I was told I couldn't because he had been bankrupt. I was paying the extra so no credit was involved. Can anybody tell me how bankcrupcy affects your ability to drive? What is the thinking behind it.
Thanks

Obviously it doesn't.
But the Great Insurers keep information going back scores of decades on who claims, what groups are higher risk etc and BRs come out as higher risk in their years of experience - just like 17yo boys are more likely to have a high speed accident but middle aged men are more likely to drink drive. They base their assumptions on statistics.
Many insurers do insure BRs and do not have a problem with it, so if you cannot insure him then he will have to get his own. Pain in the bottom!
The Co-Op are AOK for BRs.0 -
Try speaking to a local broker as they have the expertese and are able to quote from a number of insurers who do not ask any questions regarding bankruptcy. In fact I know of only 1 that will penalise a br and that is Aviva.
Many comparison sites and direct companies credit check as do Aviva hence using such companies will be difficult after br, however I know that at least 1 broker software house do not ask any questions regarding br and that only Aviva enforces a credit check...
Same for house insurance if anyone is reading this, use a broker they will have options for you0 -
stevemarsh1976 is right... I used a broker, didnt have a single problem with inusrance for house or anything.0

We have not long renewed our car insurance. We went with Admiral and when we told them we were both undischarged BR's their reply was 'we don't rate on BR so no need to inform us'. Result.0

Please have a look through this thread, in particular post 227 which shows how I have been battling insurance companies and The AA has changed its line. If you are genuinely concerned and would like to change this important issue, I could really use your help on that thread.0 -
Just thought I would say I'm with Hastings Direct, told them from the outset that I was BR and would that effect me paying monthly (he explained that as they were independent they don't do credit checks... not sure if that is true or not but took their word for it!!) or getting insurance and they said NO!! good result too as it was cheaper than the other company I was with!!0

I'm with them too Jools, very cheap!
(and nice to BRs
I haven't actually gotten anywhere with my letters City - just people being useless and washing their hands of it (not that I take that for an answer, but some of them are now refusing to talk to me anymore, I have worn them down so much lol).I used to be PixiePie, but MSE don't seem to love me and won't help with a password problem. So I'm now a very hairy Hamster (I honestly didn't realise the name could be seen as a little rude when I came up with it!)
